Diesle is good too. Basically anything that cleans and then lubes. I just happened to use 90w gear oil. My cable was the metal type with a solid core so I just wiped it down and installed. Good to go.
What ever you use you'll forget about it shortly cause it'll just work.
WD40 works in a pinch. During my rebuild I completely removed them, derusted, and stuck them in a new bottle of gear oil and soaked them for like 3 months. Worked great after that!
But any petroleum based lube will work. Graphite works too.
