As I am sure, most of the folks on here know about smog laws here in California. They are strict and designed to take old cars off the road. Took mine for the biennial inspection. Passed all the tail pipe and initial inspections. Failed due to only being at 2 degrees before TDC.
WTF!!!!.

What @pitterpatter said except use left- handed or reverse drill bits and put drill in reverse NO EZ-OUTS. I have found that many times the heat and vibrations will loosen bolt and with drill in reverse it will spin it right out. This does not always work but it doesn't get in the way of the...
No matter what you find is the problem after all that work a fusible link would be a good Idea. @Coolerman has a very inexpensive fusible link set up for your '76
If you can find one, get an old analog dwell/tach meter ( kind with a needle) . I had the same issue (77 with original ignition set up) as you with a different make.
Replied in another thread similar to this. I bought it brand new over 45 years ago. It is part of my life now. When I drive it I am a kid again. It is my time machine . Can't put a price on that.
City Racers distributor is a plug and play with original coil and ignitor on a 1977. My original distributor bushings wore out and I could no longer get accurate gap to stay. Bought City Racer's. Works perfect with my 45 year old this month coil and ignitor. Points last a long time with this...
Just like @shipmag 1977. Bought new in Las Vegas. October will make 45 years. Only 21 when I bought it. Original engine, trans, transfer, carb, starter, new Toyota distributor, re-cored radiator, Marks Off road steering box overhaul, new paint in 1992, window sticker and original bill of sale
@Livinginthepast when did that smog law pass in Arizona? There were lots of people here in California that had thrown away smog equip they did not need until they changed the law and made it retroactive then they had to scramble to get vehicle legal. And that is most of my point. It seems to me...
I would leave it the way it is. How much performance are going to gain? Who knows what the future will hold? I know out west here states like Colorado and Arizona are moving towards more stringent emission controls. Who is to say that trend won't continue into other states? At least document and...
Been working on the 55 a lot so decided to take a little ride around "my backyard". Tech part - I adjusted my rear brakes and needed to make a thorough test drive.
I live in Tehachapi Ca. It is in between the Mojave desert and the San Joaquin valley. It is between two very large air masses...
The City Racer distributor ( OEM Toyota) that is for 1977 is a plug and play with ignitor or you can use the capacitor (comes with distributor) and not use ignitor. I dropped one in my 1977 and use my original ignitor and coil. It runs great. My old distributor had worn the bushing so much...
