I would consider buying another FF from cruiserparts (thats where I got mine). For $550 you get an axle you can run, although I'd replace the bearings, and then you would still have two spare hubs and spare axle shafts just in case. I think for the all the trouble of machining the spindles the...
If you are not sure about the spacer you can look at your front driveshaft, if you have a double cardon (sp?) front shaft than you do not have the spacer and the front shaft will need to lengthened. I am swapping the 5sp in to my '84 right now but I am also going to a diesel so a lot of things...
I think I had seen this issue brought up when talking about a cut and turn for a SOA conversion. IIRC you would cut the knuckle the same way you would for the c'n't and instead of just rotating it you would pull it out of the housing, install a spacer (I would think you could only go a 1/2" per...
Gotcha, that's kind of what I gathered. The only reason I questioned it is b/c there is a threaded hole in the LSD housing that is in the same place as the one on the open diff. I don't have it in front of me or I would take a pic and post it but I will see if I can get one. Any thoughts on what...
For part of my build I am installing a full float rear axle on my '84 fj60. I picked up a LSD a little while back and decided to go ahead and throw it in. I pulled the semi-float third and disassembled it so I could re-use the ring and pinion. I heated the ring up and slipped it on the diff. and...
To say finnish it would be a ridiculous statement b/c I'm not sure it can ever be finished. But I would like to get it running and driving this year, it's been out of commission for a year and half now. The list includes:
-rebuild rear diff. with limited slip
-shock mounts for SOA...
You can reuse the tranny cross member and t-case. You may not have to tap and plug the hole in the intermediate plate, mine did not have the hole, you'll see when you get into it. Don't forget the 5 gear oiler nipple and if you can find a front DS from a post '84 60 you won't have to lengthen...
Mine were very corroded and after 2 days of soaking and whacking with a hammer I took the oxy/acetylene torch to it (carefully) and that did the trick. If yours haven't been touched in a long while and you live in an area with salted roads I recommend using some heat to free things up.
x2- my '84 came with long AAL's, longer rear shackles and was riding on 33x9.5 bfg at's. It was a really nice setup for dd'ing with some dirt roads/minor off-roading.
Cummins makes an adapter plate that mates to the chevy small block pattern. They have a specific flywheel that must be used and I assume the same applies for the flex plate for the auto's. If you are going with a manual tranny (h41/42 or h55) it bolts up with either AA's or downey's chevy/toyota...
correct-a-mondo.. I am looking for the one piece metal ring. Called Kurt at cruiseroutitters but he is all out of the felt wiper kits til next week and I would like to get this thing going! Does anyone sell these individually? I figure they only come in kits and while they aren't that expensive...
I was finishing up a knuckle rebuild today and noticed that I have misplaced the metal rings that go against the steering knuckles (the side away from the tires). These are the thin metal rings that are one piece with a cut in them so they can go over the knuckle ball. Does anyone have one handy...
If you want the tranny to last you should either replace the shaft or source a smaller bearing. Welding the shaft will change the temper and most likely weaken it. If you wanted to go that route you would need to remove the shaft, weld it, turn it down the original diameter, and then heat treat...
.020" = twenty thousandths of an inch.
If you are going to replace the input shaft you might as well rebuilt the tranny. I suspect that you can get a new tranny for the cost of the input shaft as well as the rebuild.
