Builds Clifford is home again- a 1965 FJ40 FST

It‘s funny how getting in the middle of a forest sometimes blinds us to the trees in it 😂. I didn’t even think of trying this when I was consumed with rebuilding my ‘63 45. Had a little interference with the tcase and the body’s tunnel cutout flange (I thought maybe because of old age of frame...

I must have lived in a different Seattle. I got the speeding ticket going 80mph on I405. In the right hand lane, and getting passed by others. Slammed your thread Chase. Sorry ‘bout that.

Chase, is your idle kicked up as well when you pull up to a stop? I do the same thing (slight choke pull) when I need some oompf but push it in at stops to get idle back down, idles fine, even takes off ok but if I need to “go” I have to choke it a bit. I’m running that 2-carb setup so I could...

Another early morning thought: do you still have a functioning exhaust heat deflector thingy in your exhaust manifold? I wonder if this is having a cold vs. warm impact on your stumble? My deflector was removed sometime in its past by a PO so its always open, and another difference with mine...

Did all the same stuff you’ve done Chase, plugging/capping everything, getting squirts of fuel, …. and same results. Maybe this is as good as it gets.

So now were on the right track, because you still need to get this figured out so then I know what to do with my rig as I have the exact same fault (stumble) and runtime hack fix (choke). :p I'm not a fan of high(er) timing advance FWIW. But I do have a bit of a different setup, that being...

Well, finally! 😛 I guess I better pull out the dwell meter and check my new (at time of build) dizzy’s dwell instead of just assuming it is good to go out of the box 😂.

I've got a couple of the early ones I can measure as well (if I remember :p). They came out of my '65 40 and have assumed they were original to it. I was going to use them in my '63 45 instead, but the holes in the mounts in that rig (which I'm pretty certain are original) are smaller in...

Yeah I’m anxiously watching so you can figure out your issue so then I can figure out mine 😆. In the mean time you could hook a 1/8” ID rubber hose from ported vacuum (?) port to the dizzy and see if that makes any difference.

Plug your pcv line and see if that makes a difference, if not then you know that’s not an issue. And since your pcv is on manifold vacuum you should be experiencing vacuum issues with it at idle if it’s failing, not just at throttle. Vacuum test? Do you have a vacuum advanced dizzy? If so...

I’ve got one of those smoke fogger thingies, handy for finding leaks. Looking forward to seeing what you find out leak-wise. Does your choke bump up the idle as well as close the Venturi?

Dang that radiator looks great, wish we had a shop around here that’d do that. I’d like to get my original ‘63 rad restored. 😂 I’ve never replaced my parking brake shoes, not sure how that’d really ever wear out. Are you going to paint that oil fill cap orange? 😝

Awesome stuff! Can you elaborate on the shifter ball joints, like part numbers and source? Also, did the spark plug wire update to the shifter rubber bushing work? Thanks. Go Clifford!
