The simple way would be to ground it and give +12v on the ignition and accessory pins, once we establish where those are. Whether that'll get it going enough to test the fan bushing theory is another matter.. but simple enough to try as long as we can get power to those small pins without...
I’m still thinking loose cooling fans in the nav unit, which is what the CD/DVD player is a part of.
It’s not horribly difficult to remove the surrounding trim and give it a test with a lot more access for narrowing this down. Mine isn’t making the noise or I’d do it.
Try the pulling-fuses route.
I'm not willing to give up on this being a stereo/nav cooling fan issue just yet.

To me it sounds like it could be a bad cooling fan for the nav/entertainment unit. 80series has a 3” standard PC cooling fan lodged in the dash above the stereo.. I had my nav out to fix a button and didn’t remember anything like that but there must be a fan or two...
