    off roading pics, az

What's to the northwest? Nice. We're heading that way in late March. Did you get up to the NW of there at all? I can't find much about the Wikieup area. Plenty of mountains on the map, though. (Not trying to hijack this thread, and yes, I alrady posted a query to the AZ site.)

    Canyons west of Prescott

We like the Mojave a lot, and we know the Nevada part of it pretty well. We're heading over into Arizona around Wikieup and points SE at the end of March, and can't find much about the area. We'll be out for a week, and totally self-contained. We're going to hit a couple of hot springs that...

    Joshua Tree mid-March

Anybody heading out to Joshua Tree or the Mojave the week of March 16? We'll probably be around Joshua Tree most of the time unless it's inundated with climbers, but we're always keeping an eye open for interesting spots a ways from Las Vegas, which is where we've got our '94 Cruiser stashed. We...

    The New York Mountains

Yeah, it's in California, but it always feels like Nevada to us. It's pretty close to the Nevada border, and it's wild and wooly out there.

Deep Creeks, Utah, July '06, Part II

The first pic in this second part of my post shows a hut made of the friable stones in Trout Creek Canyon; there are several mines up the hill behind the hut that you can get pretty far back into if you're not worried about cave-ins. The rock's not solid, so the walls and ceilings are lined...

    Deep Creeks, Utah, July '06

Two of us went up into the Deep Creek Mountains in NW Utah for a week starting July 11. We were in a stock '94 Cruiser w/o lockers that we have stashed in Las Vegas. Tuesday: Flew into LV, picked up Cruiser and provisions, headed up Hwy 93 for about three hours to Caliente Hot Springs in...

    A free Lowrance GPS

It's great to get all this feedback. I found some at Epinions http://www.epinions.com/GPS_Devices/search_string_~lowrance%20gps/adv_search_~1 (mine is the bright yellow one) that weren't all as positive, but maybe disgruntled people are more likely to post evaluations. Based on what I've seen...

    A free Lowrance GPS

Having spent ten years as a tech writer at my company, I've been offered my choice of thank-you gifts. Once you've been here that long, the selection isn't too bad, but the only thing that I see that I really need is a GPS. Trouble is, it's not a Garmin -- it's a Lowrance, which I've never heard...

    just back from death valley

Maybe not -- what do you say it is, then? We were told about a grove of cottonwoods at the top of the canyon and found only a bare remnant of a tree, so I assumed that it was a cottonwood. Considering the long leaves in this picture and the fact that it's near water, I guess it could be a willow.

    just back from death valley

Thanks for the detailed trip report, Bill. That cottonwood you're parked under in that picture is way up at the top of the canyon, before the road gives out and you can take off on foot for Hungry Bill, right? We were using the lame "Explorer's Guide to Death Valley," which promised a grove of...

    Recommend a trail...

I'm enjoying this thread because we'll be heading out that way in not too long. Is this pic of Devil's Racetrack? What time of year, and how deep is that water?

    Cruiser destinations in Utah

Heat . . . yeah . . . that's the other thing we needed to research. We were hoping that, Utah being north of the Mojave, there would still be some coolness in the canyons in July. Maybe we'll have to schedule that trip for next spring -- the timeframe wasn't my choice, but there it is. Hey, at...

    Cruiser destinations in Utah

Great idea -- sounds like just what I was looking for. From the first Googling that I've done, it sounds like the area may not have changed much since you were there. BLM talks about old roads that have been allowed to grow over. Thanks!

    Cruiser destinations in Utah

We'll be taking the Cruiser up into Utah for the first time in early July -- it sure proved itself down in the Mojave this spring. Can you suggest any 4WD roads leading to good stuff like isolated creeks, canyons, or hot springs? We don't want to beat things up unnecessarily by creating new...

MPG???? What are you all getting?

Gas mileage on an 80 We just got back from a week in the Mojave, and my buddy computed the gas mileage for our stock '94 80 at 16.7 mpg. Is this believable? If so, I'm going to think about taking it on some longer trips, considering all we carry. I don't think a 4wd Tacoma can do much better...
