Having spent ten years as a tech writer at my company, I've been offered my choice of thank-you gifts. Once you've been here that long, the selection isn't too bad, but the only thing that I see that I really need is a GPS. Trouble is, it's not a Garmin -- it's a Lowrance, which I've never heard of -- and they say they don't know the model number. Cute, eh? Here's the beginning of what they can tell me about it: "Waterproof 16-channel GPS+WAAS+EGNOS receiver . . ."

Does anyone know anything about a Lowrance? Even if it's free I could put a lot of energy into learning the interface and then find out it's a piece of junk. Anybody heard of them?

Don't know about their GPS, but Lowrance is a long-established depth sounder/fish finder/marine electronics company. I own one of their depth sounder/fish finders and it has worked flawlessly for 20+ years. They are a quality company.

My $.02

great product manufacturer of marine electronic equipment... still have 'cheapie' lowrance handheld gps that i have used for years and years in saltwater environment. Have used their depth finders forever.

Lowrance is an excellent name, they make some pretty rugged stuff. Even the cheaper stuff is great

Lowrance===Magellan. I have an ancient Lowrance GlobalNav 212 that is rock solid. I bought it for $10.00 at a garage sale 6 years ago. Dude bought it, used it for 2 months, then it stopped workin, so he threw it in a box.......Rocket scientist didnt realize it took 4 AA batteries....

There are some neat apps for it out on the web. I think the only reason Garmin is as popular as they are is that way back when they GUI'd the user interface, and made them easy to read/navigate. The other vendors were more barebones/non-intuitive on the interfaces, and suffered.

Great for aviation as well. Garmin is still #1 for portables, but every pilot I know that flies with Lowrance loves the units (and usually upgrade to the newer/color/faster version every couple of years).

SCORE Lowrance is one of the premier GPS systems on the market. Boaters and Marine types have used them for many years, Models of the inexpensive type are only lacking in features not necessary for the average Cruiser ..You will enjoy it, I have one and love it.
