Does the 1972 FJ40 3-Speed have an Inner Boot for the Transfer Case Shifter? If so, do you know where I can buy the OEM or After Market replacement?
For clarity - I am about to buy an Inner Boot replacement for my 3-Speed Shifter and I noticed that my Transfer Case Shifter does not have an...
Every time I press the brake pedal, some brake fluid leaks from where the master cylinder connects to the brake booster.
The attached pictures shows the location where the leak occurs (at the red arrow).
I've confirmed that the master cylinder is tightened.
What can cause this leak to...
I just completed a steering knuckle rebuild and it dawned on me that I did not grease the spindles.
Are spindles supposed to be greased? If so, I will have to go back in there and grease 'em up. However, if the lack of grease will do no harm, I will just leave them as is.
The attached picture shows a leak in the pitman arm area of my '72 FJ40.
I would like to fix the leak, but I don't know what parts I need to fix it. I was assuming there would be some kind of gasket or bearing. However, after looking at SOR's page, I don't see any type of part that would fix...
While installing new u-joints, I noticed that one the yoke flanges can easily slide off of the shaft while the other cannot.
Is it normal for the flange to be able to slide off easily?
While changing out my u-joints, I noticed what looks like a missing cap on one of the shafts.
Take a look at the picture and notice the shaft on the right, in the middle of the yoke there is that washer looking thing. However, the shaft on the left has a closed cap.
Should the shaft on the...
While rebuilding my knuckles, I realized that my passenger side spindle is cracked on the shaft - see attached picture.
I can't afford a new spindle at this time, so I sealed the crack with JB Weld for now.
Although I'm not expecting the JB Weld to last for long and I do plan on buying a...
I'm in the midst of rebuilding my knuckles (1972 FJ40) and am in need of a SST for centering the knuckles.
Is there anyone out here in the Temecula Valley area that is willing/able to lend/rent me their SST?
I purchased a Knuckle Rebuild Kit from JTOutfitters and am now installing the bearing races. I noticed that the JTO races are larger than my old races (see attached picture).
I called JTOutfitters to confirm whether or not this difference in size is okay/intended and they said it's not a...
I am replacing the u-joints in my '72 FJ40 and have read that it is important to mark the yokes and driveshafts before dismantling. So I did.
However, now that I have everything dismantled and I'm looking at the yokes/shafts/etc, I don't see why marking up the parts is important. All the...
My 1972 FJ40 currently has an electrical fuel pump installed and am planning on removing the electrical pump to replace it with a mechanical fuel pump.
I have a '68-'82 Haynes TLC Manual to help guide me with the installation, however the manual doesn't show me exactly where the mechanical pump...
In the attached picture you can see that I have sandblasted, taped-off, and getting ready to paint the following FJ40 parts:
Knuckle
Knuckle Arms
Hubs
Lower Knuckle Bearing Caps
Brake Booster
Brake Master Cylinder
Clutch Master Cylinder
Spindles
Wheel Spacers
I was planning on painting all...
I am rebuilding my knuckles ('72 FJ40) and need to purchase some moly grease - I'm looking at buying AMSOIL Synthetic Polymeric Grease NLGI #2 - (I'm open to suggestions for less expensive options).
I'm not sure how much grease (i.e. how many tubes) I need to buy.
If I plan on filling...
I just finished sandblasting my knuckles, arms, and hubs. It feels good to have 40 years of rust, grease, and grime to be completely removed :)
Anyway, notice in the attached picture that the knuckle plate on the right is missing the bearing seat (or whatever it's called). It wasn't until...
I've attached a picture of the driver side axle housing of my '72 FJ40.
Notice how chewed up it is. This was caused by broken bearings.
Is the condition of this in such bad shape that it is potentially dangerous to continue to use?
I have a damaged hole in my '72 FJ40 steering knuckle - (the knuckle takes 11mm studs).
I'm fishing for advice on the best way to fix it. I am thinking that my choices are:
Install a new knuckle
Helicoil the bad hole
Retap the bad hole to a larger size
??
I like choice #3 not...
As I was dismantling my 1972 FJ40 knuckles (driver and passenger sides), I noticed that out of the 16 knuckle studs, only four of them included washers. Specifically, the four-bottom-driver-side studs included washers. None of the other studs included washers. So, I'm unsure as to whether or not...
I need new tie rod boots for my '72 FJ40. However, my local auto stores don't carry the OEM type of boots like these .
Instead, my local shops carry after market boots like these
Should I stick with the OEM type of boots or does it not really matter? - or, maybe the after market boots...
I am in the midst of repairing my knuckles and doing a disc conversion on my '72 FJ40.
I have just taken the knuckles off and have the birfield looking at me. I didn't originally plan for doing any work on the birfield, but now that it's right in front of me, I thought I'd check in with you...
My '72 FJ40 is missing a stud on the driver-side Knuckle Arm Mount (see attached picture).
The attached picture doesn't reveal this, but the stud has an attached flange to it which is making it difficult for me to find replacements for these studs.
Where can I purchase these knuckle arm...
