    1981 paint confusion

it has only been "on-island" a couple of years and garage kept. To better rephrase the question, were all 40's single stage paint thorough 82-83'?

    1981 paint confusion

Interesting, it looks the same even when I pulled off the driver's door panel to replace some broken glass. Maybe I'm tricking myself by comparing the acrylic enamel repaint on the 76 to factory single stage. It looks like the same finish inside and out as my sold 89 fj62.

    1981 paint confusion

Okay, I picked up an 81' 40 off of Craigslist in "good" condition. Original paint inside and out but I need to cut out some quarter panel rust, patch and repaint. I have a 76' 40 that clearly was painted with acrylic enamel and has that hint of orange peel. The 81' I swear even on nearly 30...

40 series convert greeting and photos

Thanks, I like the color too. I believe it was an attempt at matching the early 80's beige (code 464), but in reality it is closer to Egg Nog in my opinion. I've only had it a few days and it is definitely a head turner here in town. The plan this weekend is for a quick fluidoscapy and...

40 series convert greeting and photos

kingbeeIII, I may need to just build another garage, that may do the trick. Looking is half the fun, it took me 6 months to find this one. That was after looking at all the rusted out POS rigs for sale here in Hawaii.

40 series convert greeting and photos

Thanks all for the suggestions. Right now it is "as-is" being fresh off the boat an all. I plan on just driving it a while and figuring out what to do next. My main plan is to get it back to stock ASAP and also avoid the bezel police. Wheels and tires are definitely in order. For around here...

    Ignorance alert: front end knuckles?

While you are in there While you are in there, it may be worth servicing the birfields. This was one of the first things I did to mine last year. Take your time, do the reading and you will be fine.

    Hawaii Newbie Intro

Aloha forrest216, Thanks for the thread revival. As with most things, I've been hard pressed to source certain things locally. In terms of "pick and pull" type operations, I haven't been able to find too much. I've done business with cruiserparts.net. Even though they are on the east...

    Knuckles, Birfields, grease, oil, duuuhhhhh....

Knuckles Brake cleaner, then when you are done submerging them in the bucket of break cleaner, do it again. Having just done this last month I learned that when it came to cleaning and repacking "too much" was "almost" enough.

BigSur, those MRW wheels? If so would you be able to send me the backspace spec and source? I'm looking for the exact same type of setup for my 89.

    Birfield???

What they said Mine looked EXACTLY like that a week ago. Just finished the knuckle rebuild last weekend. While you are in there do everything for piece of mind (IMO): Get one of the kits in the previous posts. I used the one from Marlin. About 50 pairs of rubber gloves, 4 roles of paper...

    Hi Green Pea here!

Welcome Very nice and very clean. Is the dash pad original or is one of the aftermarket covers like what SOR sells? I only ask beacause I need a new one so I was curious since your picture looks as though it may have an aftermarket cover. Thanks

    Bicycle Birfield

It was a mess but a good all around experience (I'm pretty much a newbie so it was fun to learn). The only snags I ran into were: 1. Had to undo the brake lines. 89 FSM shows 3 bolts to undo the bracket but that was not to be (rivets instead). 2. Found that one of my Aisin hub locks was...

    Bicycle Birfield

Yeah I would have liked to do the pipe trick, but nearest hardware store is 30 miles away (paradise != convenience). I'll be picking one up for the next time around. The knuckle job is now complete everything seems to have gone smooth..... onto the next task (transfer case). Hmmm come to...
