head gasket replacement prep and exhaust Q's

You also might want to have the head checked out for warpage. Otherwise, your new head gasket won't last.

    Ignition switch replacement procedure.

Just completed the ignition switch change using the procedures posted above (excellent resource by the way!!). I had to replace the ignition lock cylinder and ignition switch after my wife was stranded at the airport. My wife called me saying that the key would not turn in the ignition no...

Oil pan removal and bottom end inspection

I did a head gasket change with the motor in. The front timing cover had to be off and the oil pan needs to be dropped to do this. I unbolted the motor mounts and lifted the motor by the pulley a couple inches for the pan to clear the frame cross-member. It is possible.

New CSC Members Pavegel & Mike!!!

Glad to have joined the group and looking forward to many outings. Here's my rig: 1996 FZJ80 with lockers. Haven't done much else to it except replace the twisted up running boards with a set of sliders I fabbed up. Also did major engine work last year replacing the head gasket. This my second...

    Sliders with a step down?

Recently built these with .120 wall 2" square and 1 3/4" tube steel. Although I don't ever plan on high siding any boulder, I think my rockers will be well protected. They also sit exactly where the running boards were and will allow my kid easy entry/exit and my wife can wear a skirt when she...

NEW 4X4 Labs Bumper in the raw, What rattle can for paint?

I painted my home built sliders with Rustoleum Textured Black over Semi gloss black and primer after I realized the gloss looked too good and did not match the rest of rode-hard and weathered look of my 80. The textured surface also provided just enough grip that no-skid tape is unnecessary.

What Did You Do with Your 80 This Weekend?

Just finished up my first real fab job for my 80. I had to lose the running boards cause I kept bending them up, but the wife and kid complained they had a hard time getting into to truck without them. Great excuse to weld up a set of sliders. Here's a teaser while I wait for the paint to dry...

EGR Fault Pinpointed... Clogged Port of the Throttle Body

Safety wire did it. Port R was clogged pretty good, but I got it cleared. However, the CEL popped back on. For what ever reason I cannot get the EGR Valve to open. Still no vacuum between vac modulator and the EGR valve above 2500 rpm on a hot engine.

EGR Fault Pinpointed... Clogged Port of the Throttle Body

Way ahead of you. Upper and lower intakes were cleaned out and all of the hoses were replaced when I did the HG. The ports in question are on the throttlebody. I was just wondering if someone could recommend a product that was better than carb or throttlebody cleaner at cleaning out small...

EGR Fault Pinpointed... Clogged Port of the Throttle Body

I've been chasing a recurring P0402 code for low EGR flow by needlessly replacing parts. I downloaded the Emissions FSM and started troubleshooting today. I found zero vacuum between the Vacuum Modulator and the EGR valve on a fully warmed up engine at 2500 RPM. When I checked to see if there...

What Did You Do with Your 80 This Weekend?

R+R Head gasket and timing chain, steering pump rebuild COMPLETE!!!!! Got it running today!!! Another lesson learned: beck/arnley parts don't always fit right. Crankshaft timing gear didn't fit at all.

    Timing cover removal

Near as I can tell it was this small chuck of gasket that I think fell on the pump drive shaft gear while I had the head off. It was the only thing found on the gear itself. It doesn't seem that substantial, but the gears seem to mesh close enough that if anything fell on them it would prevent...
