Ok, I broke the cardinal rule and f'd with the EGR cooler (1980 FJ40). One of the two bolts mounting it to the block snapped, the other came out no problem. My only goal was to loosen the cooler enough to get enough play to allow the EGR pipe to seal to the manifold, then tighten the cooler...
Need procedure for removing steering shaft from steering column on early '80 FJ40. Doing OEM power steering conversion and want to use my original column with donor steering shaft.
Thanks

Early 1980 FJ40 - recently replaced drums/shoes on rear, during which I followed the FSM which said to pull the adjuster pistons to regrease. In greasing the driver's side rear cylinder (2 per wheel), the spring pushed the cup downwords, and brake fluid began to leak. I quickly regreased and...
My neighbor's drunk girlfriend plowed into the back of my parked 1980 FJ40 last night. Need some recommendations for knowledgeable / good body shops in Austin.
Thanks.
Finally got around to replacing rear brake drum and shoes on my 1980 FJ40. Decided to follow the manual which called for the removal of the wheel cylinder adjusting wheel to regrease. First wheel cylinder went fine, but when I removed the adjuster from the rearmost cylinder on the driver side...
Hate F'ing birfs...tried all the tricks to disassemble birfs and nothing. Tried pipe trick...knocked a hole in the road in front of my house, but the birf just sat there mocking me. Tried the FSM techique...brass drift and 3lb hammer...nothing. Anyone have any other suggestions?
Also, checked...
Reading the FAQs on proper order of split ring, rubber, felt seals on rear of knuckle and read that the 'split' in the split ring was supposed to be installed at the 12 oclock position (top of knuckle). Looking at exploded veiw on man-a-fre website, the split is at the 6 oclock position...
In the middle of a knuckle service on my '80 FJ40 and have a few questions.
1) When applying the pipe trick to separate the inner axle from the birf, does the pipe have to be metal? Thought I read on a few posts that some people were using Sch 40 PVC
2) Read on other knuckle serivce posts...

1980 FJ40, springs are sagging and am trying to find a source for replacement springs with the same ride height. Not interested in lifting the truck, any ideas?
Thanks.
1980 FJ40 - 1st Time setting ignition timing on a 2F and am having a hell of a time even getting a wrench/socket on the Dizzy hold down bolt. I have tried 1/4inch drive sockets, small box end wrenches, etc. I am sandwiched between the vacuum advance on the dizzy itself, oil filter, and oil...
1980 2F engine, bought rebuilt head from SOR to replace cracked head. Question is, do I need to worry about the height of the 2 locating dowels because more than likely the head was decked?
Also, upon reassembly I want to ensure the valve adjustment is not too tight. Yes, I know they are...
So, just heard from machine shop that my 1980 2F cylinder head has cracks in from the valve seat traveling into the head. At this point they said the cracks are not leaking, but could at any point. I told the machine shop to deck the damn thing, put new valve seals (not seats) on it, and I...
