So there are times when a car gets a scratch that is completely through the clearcoat, really too deep to buff out. It catches your finger nail.

Question...why can't you just lightly spray the scratch area with clearcoat from an aerosol can, and then buff it in, blending it with the surrounding clearcoat finish? Does that not work?
 
Actually better to use a small paintbrush - I've had people say a nail polish brush or even a paper match - to lay clearcoat directly into the scratch and then buff it down. Spraying covers too large an area and makes a lot more work.
