Thats a good idea . I am kicking around the same idea. I got a line up on a toyota bed. May have to use some of your ideas
 
The custom frame under our TrailBlazer features a sliding tongue. I find it useful for moving around the yard w/o a dolly, but have never towed with it extended. The socket receiver tube extends the whole length of the trailer frame and was set-up so that the PO's cradled Warn M8 could be plugged into the rear of the trailer if need-be. I use it for our bike carrier.

That frame is stout.

Finally got the topper sold. Kind of sad to see it go. I wish I had space to keep it, but it didn't fit my end goals.

Got my rear slider sytem put in place and waiting on shock mounts to arive to complete the suspension. Also I have started the repurposing of a jeep bumper I had on my old jeep from 5 years ago that has been sitting in the shed.

It's been awhile since I've had a dump truck , but I think when my tongue was extended there was half mybe more of the sliding part of it was always inside the sleeve. If that makes sense. So if thats how yours is set up, you should be fine on the highway. It looks like your thickness is enough.
 
At a fork in the road... Can't decide if I want to continue to beat on the fenders to open them up another few inches or cut and do a 4" pacer universal flare.

The current shape has all ben done with out heat. The next step will be time consuming and in the end might not work and have to resort to the 4" flare anyway. A rose bud tip I should be able to stretch and get another inch of width meaning that a 2" universal flare or a lot of welding grinding to add more of a metal lip to it.

Thoughts???

Mor pics. The rear side of the bed cuts in about an inch so I'll be trying to flare that put to match the rest then ad a mud flap below

Decided to cut the fenders and use pacers 4" flare.

Also adding a little old School to a modern aluminum rim.

Don't know why I didnt cut the finders to start this was easy and quick. These sheet metal vise grips mad quick work of it. The flares should fit easy.

The hubcaps will fit this look very well. I got the pacer fender flares in today they look great. Very well molded and HD.

Got the pacer universal flares in I like them. need to clean up my lip in a few places still. But very happy with my decision

Really thought I had made up my mind on light gray inner and rail with dark grey outside, but think I'm leanin toward green inner and sand tan exterior

I have enjoyed watching your progress. The flares look much better than I had pictured in my head. I agree tan and green, or match your tow rig.
 
I'm going green and tan. Prepped and chassle paint base coat to seal the old rusted metal after wire wheeling for 2 hours.

Not sure if I'll have time tomorrow to do the monsterliner or not. We'll see

Inside bed is done going to remove the bed from the frame to do under side. And exterior. That's going to slow down the progress a little bit since I'm using my dad's place that has a little more room to work.

Getting closer under side of the bed is coated with magnetic paints chassie saver then ended up getting duplicolor rust stop top coat. It's a flexible under coating type finish.

Dessert sand colored liner is down. Now just need to finish up the frame welding and Pint then put it back together

Got a lot of finish welding done. Couple little details to iron out and should be ready for frame paint.

Thanks for the thread and all the pics. I've given up on a military trailer, too hard to find and too expensive when I do. I'm really liking the 70s/early 80s pickup beds with the stamped tailgate and you're giving me some great ideas.

I think truck beds get a bad rap due to some very poor examples that people see out on the road. and i agree. they can be made nice, safe, and functional. you really wouldn't need to all the frame work i've done. But why not.
