    Building my own pop top

Oh and I forgot, those alu boxes have probably 150lbs of gear in them easily (climbing, kayaking, surfing equipment). :D I go through brake pads like they're butter and always went to toyota dealers to get decent ones. As for stuff getting stolen, just a small anecdote: 300 days in South...

    Building my own pop top

I have 25 gal of water, 65gal of fuel and a fridge in the back. Full size spare, rear kaymar, front ARB, group 31 battery. The entire build is so heavy it's not made for going fast or doing crazy off camber turns but the truck is in South America, so things don't go fast ever. Throughout the...

Trunk Door Seal: OEM only or generic?

When going through puddles a bit too fast I usually get quite a bit of water up into the trunk. It's along the entire length. I think the door seal that I have is a bit old and doesn't expand as much anymore. Has anyone ever replaced the seals? Generic or OEM part? I'm in Peru right now and...

    Three adults in a pickup?

@coldtaco, that truck looks perfect. If I still was in the US... I will see what I can find in South America and take home with me on my way back. @ozcruiser: I don't want to know how hard it will be to get this done in the US. I already had to have my 80 LRA tank & kaymar rear bumper shipped...

    Three adults in a pickup?

As for my 80 series: It doesn't even have the threads for the rear seatbolts anymore. My 80 is definitely not a family car anymore but luckily family is still years out so I have some time. Not the 25 years I need for the DOKA but I will deal with it when the time comes ;)

Thanks for the info. If only there was a 25 year old double cab...

    Three adults in a pickup?

I own an 80 and am thinking of finally get a 70 series that I've long wanted. My 80 series only has the two front seats left and I'm sure even if I'd get a troopy it wouldn't take long until the rear area is completely converted into an RV with no seats left. However I'd much prefer a pickup and...

What Did You Do with Your 80 This Weekend?

Here's a few pics from this week(end)... We had some fun in death valley and by chance I ran into a few other land cruiser owners. Lippincott Pass was a piece of cake in current conditions. The only thing that happened was that we lost the upper half of our antenna. It's the first time I've gone...

    Building my own pop top

@PlantDriver your rig is probably even more loaded than ours! That makes me feel much better ;) 25gal stainless tank is probably similar in weight/load on the swing out than our bikes. The bike rack is not much more than 250lbs fully loaded. The huge alu box contains mostly light & bulky stuff...

    Building my own pop top

My truck fully loaded is 7800lbs (water, full fuel, 2 people, all my gear). There's an extra 40gal of fuel in the back which I don't plan on doing often (so subtract ~300lbs for fuel). The OME application guide (http://www.arbusa.com/Uploads/PDF/onlineManualsGuides/OME_Guide_current.pdf page 80)...

    Building my own pop top

@Funner, I'm waiting on getting the heavy duty OME coils. Previous owner put Mediums in there. Hoping that will do the trick! Should give me 1600lb above GVWR. Airbags are next if that doesn't work. I haven't been able to take it off the road much in Tahoe for fear of bottoming out the coils and...

    Building my own pop top

@890man, yes that's very well possible! I've been doing the SF to Sonoma (where I've been building 90% of my car at a friend's place and at Mudrak's) a few dozen times... I've been working day and night on my build and it's now in the final stages... I've never started a proper build thread...

    Building my own pop top

The trip is still on going. but here's a small teaser: just north of Reno last night I found a cute little bridge that I crossed over to camp out with a few friendly cows as neighbors: I was up skiing on Shasta this weekend and drove down through Lassen Ntl Forest. This was a short meal...

    Building my own pop top

It's been a very long time since I've had time to actually work on the roof. I've mostly been focusing on the interior (hot water heater, water filtration, propane stove). But a few weeks ago we finally did it, we cut the roof and glued the top down with sikaflex (a caulking like glue). I...
