I bought a smaller bottle that I could afford when first starting. Then throughout succeeding exchanges picked up the increasingly larger sizes for the price difference and cost of gas.
I also used plain CO2 for awhile and it worked fine.
Check with your local welding supply but mine will exchange bottles size for size..
So you could buy one of these oxygen bottles and exchange it for a CO2/argon of the same size for $100.00...
sometimes you can find used bottles on marketplace or craigslist, just make sure they are not in need of certification. Altho, the certification may still be less than a new bottle, depending on how much you need to spend to buy it in the first...
I was given advice 42 years ago when I started buying welders for home use, buy your bottles don't rent, buy the biggest bottles you can stack on the back of your welder.
