Ah, I see. that makes sense. then put a plate over it. I have holes top and bottom of that hole but of course a bolt looks broken off lol. I just got this 8274 yesterday so I'm in the planning stage of cleaning it up.

Very good to know. I tend to agree these winches are underrated. I'm thinking with the 6hp it may be more of a 12k rating. It would likely out pull my current VR10000. weighs 3x as much.

Do you have any idea about how much the increase would be? I'm planning a full restore and thinking I may as well upgrade the motor as this one is 40 years old.

    warn vr1000 freespool

lol, I'm going to give a light mist of wd40 In the free wheel lever hole. i read that should be part of the maintenance procedure. If that fails I'll tear that side down, clean it up and reassemble. Thank you.

I just rebuilt a winch. new to them really. is the spool supposed to move with the control while in free spool? i can stop it with my hand easy when it is moving. dumb question but I'd like to know i didnt mess anything up.

    Internal lube

WARN VR10000 I know I am supposed to use grease to lube the gears. Question is, can I use an oil or hydraulic fluid , gear oil instead? The reason is I am in northern Alberta Canada and was thinking it may be easier in the Winter months.
