Hood insulation is supposed to help maintain constant engine compartment temperature. One use is to prevent hotter temperatures in the hot summer days from reaching the compartment when the sun is beaming down on the hood. I don’t know if this...
That's the kind of CAD I can get into! I can just imagine DJ has a saying for whatever he is doing with cardboard, to make the acronym work :)
I don't want to open up my wheel wells but I will. I was about yesterday years old when I learned the...
Yes, I insulated it years ago. I have often wondered the same thing. I may take it off and check it out. But first I am going to build baffles between the radiator and the bib. Probably some aluminum ones with a short rubber flap to seal it up...
Interesting idea on the bib, I may copy that.
Concerning overheating, has your hood always been insulated? I thought about it but would rather let the heat transfer out. Not sure if that’s solid logic or not.
Bet those were some great times.
Yeah, that museum was wild, being where it was. Truly Smithsonian quality. The founder apparently was the CEO of one of the big nationwide hospitals.
I bought an Aqualu bib just so I could cut the holes bigger to get more air flow. It worked out really well and it's not really noticeable that they are bigger.
Test fitting the bezel on...

About 2 miles or so north of Colter bay. Right on the water,
The boat ride/tour out of Colter bay is good too, lots of wild...
That tent/cabin looks like the ones in Colter Bay. Is that correct or somewhere else? Great little place and the next place north of therer has really good pizza.
I was just though Jackson, Tetons and Wind River back in April of this year. Still had between 4-6' of snow on the ground in a lot of places in the higher elevations. It was Beautiful. I saw that museum but did not have time to stop, would...
I second this. I love when a good story is out there with these trips. This is something I would like to focus on myself.
Also thank you for bringing Wyoming back in to perspective for me. I lived in Laramie for a while and forgot a lot of the...
Thank you.
A trip in an FJ40 is much more tiresome than a modern 4x4 in my opinion. Anything over 150-200 miles in a day is pretty tough. I think the sweet spot for a road trip would be 100 miles per day with a stop or two.
I’ll say this…the...
Awesome trip, and awesome storytelling.
What kind of distances do you average each day in an FJ40? I would suspect slightly less than a typical day in a modern 4x4?
Somehow I didn't end up posting this. Found a weigh bridge this spring, had some tools and a few odds and ends in the back. 4740lbs, not bad for the little TDI to be pulling around.
Made Yellr work some tonight. There are some volunteer trees growing on my Uncle's property - Used the spare tire and winch to pull three out.
Yellr kind a clean.
thick root..
tap root is 4+ feet long on this sucker.
From here, it was a cannonball run to find the next place to stay for the night. We left Atlantic City in the rain and headed south.
We were hoping to find a spot to camp in the totally unknown (at least to us) Granite Mountains, but the rain...
We found Atlantic City in a light rain and parked by a place called The Atlantic City Mercantile.
Robert Redford stated in The Outlaw Trail, "There is only one hub of activity in Atlantic City. It is the Mercantile, and combination bar and...
The next morning, it was time to get on the road and back to dirt.
So I'd read about a couple of cool ghost towns just on the south end of the Winds and Popo Agie. Atlantic City was one of these, and we really wanted to check it out.
Sure...
