I would have that shop (or do it yourself) inspect the brake lines as that double pump requirement sounds like air bubbles in the system?! With 325K miles there's a good chance that a brake line has deteriorated. This is best done on a lift and...

Idler pulley would be my first guess given the mileage. Not discounting the brake system but I would check that idler pulley first.

I've had the 24 gallon auxiliary tank for a few years now and love it, no issues with the pump (although it is slow) and no trail damage to it.
