I've rebuilt two 8274 winches since 1998, and have used the modern parts (wave washers) from Warn, with no brake issues on either winch. Hope this helps.

I think that any one of the three vent lines that go to the plastic chamber from the tank will work fine for venting..

Sorry for late reply I noticed no difference in the performance of the transmission between the two methods/amounts of gear lube. Which was what I was hoping for. How often does the easy way out really work as well as the 'proper' way?
