Sounds like you've tried all the obvious fixes. From my own experience I have always found that problems with idling and not starting up / difficulty are related to my carb being full of crap. Couldnt hurt to rebuild it.

I have a similar squeak! Not the fan belt as I have recently replaced the water pump and found it was nice and tight. It makes a definitively different pitch than the fanbelt. Is it much higher in tone and lighter sounding? A mechanic told me my starter was going....that was four...

Maybe he meant clogged or that something was stuck in them. Definitely do the carb rebuild as its great fun and good way to figure out all the ins and outs of it. Soak in some thinner also be sure to get some compressed air and blow the crap out of all the little fuel channels and holes.

Since you worked out your Hgih and low speed fan problems i was wondering if your brights work? Mine don't. I have to pull the indicator blinker towards me and hold. If I push it away with it locked into what should be brights position nothing happens. any ideas? sorry for high jacking

eh...im not a everything must-be-stock religion kind of guy. Plus my fix didnt cost me anything but what was laying around. Ill just be happy if it holds up for a couple of years. That and it wouldnt solve the rusty drain nozzles that the hoses attach to. Thanks for the info anyway.

Turns out where the hoses attach to drain the vent. It had rusted around the drain holes. Oh and the passanger side hose had split. After calling my local parts place and finding out this was a do it yourselfer i thought maybe some clear soft plastic hosing from the hardware shop might...
