Well, after filling up my whiney xfer case, the whine went away, but now after a few days a substantial amount of the oil is back out on the ground.

So it looks like I need to pull it and repleace seals and/or gaskets. I have not looked to see exactly where its leaking yet.

Any recommendatoins on where to get the replacement seals/gaskets? Anything else I should do while I'm in there?

(1976 F2 with the 4 speed)

thanks!

The most problematic leak will be @ the speedo housing seal. I'd machine off the inner lip of the speedo housing & run (2) stock seals. I run these in 2 rigs w/ no leaks at all:

So you're both saying that this is the likely culprit? Is this doable without pulling everything down?

If your parking brake drum is covered in greasy gook, yes. One  :wrench: job. BTW, I purchased the Mudrak modified dbl. seal speedo housing & pinched/tore the special thinner seal on install. I couldn't find one locally, so I decided to have mine machined for 2 stock one's. Here's both seals included in the Mudrak unit:

Cool. I'm going to crawl under there and grab some photos... see what's up. The info is much appreciated.

I did the Mudrak double seal as well. I could have had it machined locally in Guatemala but from past experience it has to be right not to leak. The Mudrak one is right.

Full disclosure, I am not a mechanic, but just go thru life figuring thing out as I go. I also don't play one on TV :D So, here come the stupid questions :)

One of my guesses was that the leak was coming from the circular thing just to the left of the speedo cable nut.

Can someone confirm/tell me that the speedo housing is the bit just before the parking brake drum? I assume the seal you're all talking about is where the shaft exists the housing, going aft just before the brake drum. It's is very messy there. There's also drops around the drain plug, but that things is on there super tight, and I did not forget the little metal seal gasket.

Here's a photo:

The "circular thing" is the idler shaft and it could be leaking there. All that stops oil from leaking is a rubber "O" ring.

The speedo housing is that bit which the speedo cable attaches to. There is a seal at the parking brake backing plate that often fails and that is the seal they double up.

Is this fixable without dropping the transfer case completely out? I would guess that the speedo housing is... but I would guess No on the idler shaft O-ring ?

Hiya,

If you have the time, inclination, and funds, you may want to pull the tranny & Tcase & do a cleaning, paint & seal replacement on both. I recently ordered seals individually from MAF & plan to do that as well as renewing the clutch & putting a new gear in the speedo. It looks like you have a good bit of oil coming out & the replacement of the seal on the shaft may be a PITA to do it while the T case is still on the vehicle. Also, you may find that after you go through the trouble of replacing that one seal, another may start leaking. Dropping the tranny and t case in a pig is a semi PITA, but once it's out, the longest time will be spent cleaning the thing. It's also easy to do a bunch of other things while you got the tranny/tcase out. I'll put the Mudrak double seal later if I keep having a leak. If I had extra funds and didn't just get a new seal for it, i'd do the mudrak in a heartbeat. IH8 Oil leaks. I pulled the tranny/tcase off twice to get a rear main seal in right.
Best luck, ty

Thx for the good advice...

Take it out, do it right!

Remember, you can do it right or you can do it twice! I'm partial to right.

Toyota sells a gasket and seal kit as well. OEM quality.

You will get the OEM quality idler shaft, as well as factory offering of shims.

Kurt @ Cruiser Outfitters carries a rebuild kit as well. I have dealt with Kurt and like him. I have not dealt w/ JT...

I don't think Toyota's kit comes with shims or the idler shaft. The ones I've ordered in Central America and Canada did not.

I'm guessing: While I'm there, may as well do the tranny as well? anything else "while I'm there?" :D
