If you have a shop do the repair work you might be faced with a tough decision. They could find some real issues leading to the need for a complete rebuild. If so you will then be commited to it because your rig will be in their shop. Best to go in prepared for the worst. Before you go in you can do some investigating of your own. Pay attention to tranny noise in all gears. Does one gear make more noise than the others? Is it hard to shift into first? Does first ever grind. If the synchros are shot then big $'s. Another thing you can do is crawl under there and grab the drive shafts up near the transfer case. Give them a shake. If there is alot of movement then the output bearings are shot. With this knowledge you will be armed and ready to go in and have a talk with the shop before commiting to the work. The less surprises the better I say.

I'm guessing: While I'm there, may as well do the tranny as well? anything else "while I'm there?" :D

Besides the Tcase, you can do the rear main seal, pilot bearing, clutch, check your tranny & seals, check your speedo gear teeth, clean and replace the shoes on your parking brake.

If you have time, some space to work, some tools, & a FSM, it's really not that tough to do it yourself. It was one of the first things I did when I got my pig & It was a good intro to pig mechanics.

BTW, your paper models are Awesome! I need to get a few soon for the office.

On the tranny, I would only do the seals. Toyota tranny's are tough both on durability and to remove bearings!

Are there any marking on the transfer cases to see exaclty which one you have in order to order replacement gaskets or rebuild kits?

Randy

Anyone? This pig is a bit of a frankenstein since it has the 78 2F in the 72 pig......If I am going to order a rebuild kit I want to get the right one. Mine is not leaking around the speedo cable. Looks like gaskets just need replaced....
