Hey there, when I start my truck (84 bj60 with a 3b) the rpm sits at about 1000, but after getting warm it goes up to 1500rpm. This seems really high, especially for a diesel, any thoughts? I did search and didn't find any related threads.

Is your hand throttle holding it up a little?

or is the linkage sitting on the idle screw(stop)?

Second, when the diaphram for the injection pump gets leaks the idle will go up. So if you cannot adjust it down that might be the problem.

It should idle around 800 when warm, and when cold you use the hand throttle to bring it up a little to let it warm up.

I have seen when you set the hand throttle when cold it is 1000rpm, then you start to drive and it goes up to 1500. The setting with the hand throttle doesn't work like a govenor, it will change if you go above and then set it down again.

So first make sure your hand throttle isn't interferring with the idle. Then try adjusting the idle stop screw, if that doesn't work, research diaphram on here, lots of talk about it.

if it starts creeping up again then your diaphram is ripped and needs replacing...

The diaphragm can have a pinhole in it and that can be enough.

Been there, done that!

Anyone know what a new diaphram is worth? Looking at the manual they seem really simple to replace.

They're about $80 and they SEEM really simple to replace

Is the 80 at Yota? I heard 30 from Rob Millison, but I think he is still out from and accident(????) The BC club guys should know.

~$20 at an injection shop... X5 at the dealer

Simple would not be the word I'd use. Get some hemostats and a dentist type mirror. Avoid coffee for the 12 hours preceeding. Remove EDIC including bracket from the engine block. Find a nice step stool and an old pillow to lean on the fender with. Do all this and the project will only suck but not make you mental.

Yeah Rob is out. He's pretty busted up and my attempt to cheer him up last week likely put his recovery back by at least two weeks.

Being in the Kootenays the nearest dealership is an hour away and the nearest diesel place is 4 hours away so I'll likely order it from somewhere, any suggestions? Sounds like a fun job, thanks for ther advice gents.

Yep, the $80 was at Toyota. I've had my '82 BJ60 WAY longer than 'Mud or any other info exchange so alot of my earlier repairs were with OEM parts at the dealer. I did the diaphragm probably 5-6 years ago at least.

3B diaphram

got a phone# or e-mail addy for a diaphram for 3B. colby said mine needs replacing and after reading lowenbrow's post, i think i will do it while it's sitting on the engine stand.

Those who have done the procedure, would it help having the LH inner fender on a 60 removed prior to doing this? Its really simple to pull the inner fender. imop

Just wondering......

No, the inner fender was not in the way at all.

no, it is the lack of movement to access the retaining pin that is the seat of frustration. if Toyota had designed the unit to move a mear 1/8th" would have made all the difference in the world...

thanks westintl for the denso part # on the diaphram. i got one ordered from an injection pum repair shop here in abilene tx today.
