3b power steering pump and bracket

In your neck of the woods a pump bracket off a BJ60 would work, or even new otherwise its a bit of work to build one.

You will need the extra crank pull and also the adjuster or idler pully.

I just did a booty fab for a local, would of been much easier to install used parts from a BJ60.

It was not a option in our case so we used a idler pully of some toyota and welded in a mount.

Rob,

Dont' the altenators change when you have power steering? I know that I could not interchange altenators between the 3B in my kid's FJ55 which does not have power steering and the '84 BJ60 that I used to have that had power steering. I can't remember just why that was.

When I frame off’d my 1981 BJ42 I ordered a new rad from Toyota. It showed up with the top port on the left side, as opposed to the right, which was stock on the 81/82's. I researched, and discovered that in 1983 Toyota changed the rad to accommodate the P/S pump reservoir. The bracket that holds the P/S reservoir above the alternator (on those model years) also incorporates part of the alternator bracket. Is that what you mean Charles?

That's what I mean. I tried mounting an older altenator on the newer bracket or vice versa and it doesn't work. Seems to me that there was not enough movement of the altenator to get the belt tight.

I'm also adding a power steering to my 3B. It's from a '91 Hilux. However, the wheel un the power steering pump is an 11 mm and the pulley wheels on the crank, alternator, etc. are 15 mm. Anyone have any idea how to match this?

Woooo !

Is I'm understand... I can't swap a PS pump (w/bracket, w/reservoir and pulley) from a 1984 BJ60 on my 1982 BJ42 w/out power steering without having alternator belt problem?

How about changing the alternator bracket and put the one from BJ60 alternator on my BJ42 ?

This thread is very interesting. I'm about to do that in the next few week. I have a BJ60 engine with everything around (including the P/S pump) and I will swap the P/S... and I did not figure any problem before reading that !

By now, I did not have the BJ60 engine at my home... so I can't figure how I should resolve this potential problem.

First thought would be to get a machine shop to open the hole to 15mm. If you need to go the other way, I'd try to find a pulley with an 11mm centre and the proper diameter/belt width.

For some reason my 83 BJ60 had most of P/S pump related parts removed so I had to put it all back on. Here is a list of some Toyota part numbers for some of what I needed. some of these parts are for a BJ70 as the original 60 part is no longer available. The balancer, the A/C pulley and the pump I got directly from Japan as I couldn't find them in North America. I can't gurantee these will work on a conversion but it all worked on my BJ60. I did have to get a longer bolt for the balancer but that was no problem through McMaster-Carr.

13477-60030 P/S Crank Pulley
88451-25020 A/C Crank Pulley (you need this or a plate to space out the P/S pulley and the factory plate is no longer available)
13470-56171 Crank Balancer/Pulley (this is the one with six bolt holes to mount the two pullies)
44443-60060 P/S Pump Bracket (this what actaully mounts the pump to the head)
44320-60090 P/S Pump ( the original BJ60 pump isn't available now but this the same pump except the high pressure port is on the pax side of the pump instead of in the back)
99343-11510 P/S Belt

If you need all this stuff I am parting a 3B out of a BJ70, Still has all the PS parts, pulley, AC spacer on it.

1984 BJ60 power steering stuf for a 1982 BJ42

I found time to go dismantled the power steering ''accessories"" on the engine from a 1984 BJ60 for the swap on my 1982 BJ42.

The bracket for the pump is bolt on.

The tensioner bolt is on.

However, in fact, there is a problem for the alternator. The hole for the bolt is not adjusted to the slot of the adjuster. In addition, the belt is not long enought for the pulleys.

Here is my solution: because I had enlarged the hole in my alternator caused by a broken bolt, I now used a bolts and nut to adjust my alternator. So I will probably enlarge the hole enough to pass a bolt.

Then I will look for the belt spec and buy one slightly longer.

Well, I finaly bought a Goodyear Gatorback V-Belt # 22494 ..... 1245mm / 49''. It fit perfectly.

David, your picture shows what I was saying earlier. Does your new belt allow enough movement to tension properly?

I'll answer ... probably. I make a complete restoration of my BJ42 and it can start it since the major component is not connected ... I'll know next spring. ;)

Any update? I'm working though a P/S install on my '82 BJ60 using OEM components.

It seems like the fan hits the idler but when I check the fan and fluid clutch are the same part number for both P/S equipped trucks and non-P/S equipped trucks. I know the original fan broke in Honduras when we did the frame swap so maybe the replacement fan is not the correct one though it fits fine.

I believe there's a spacer in there somewhere, or the ac pulley acts as a spacer, something like that. I would be surprised if it didn't show up on the EPC.

I have A/C so no need for a spacer because the A/C pulley is doing that job. The problem is the idler pulley that mounts against the timing cover is going to stick out so far that it will hit the fan.

I'll snap a picture of the fan today as it may be the wrong one.

I would say, fanilly, yes.

Although I have no yet start my engine, everything seems in working order... I have enough space to stretch the belt correctly ... and the 1984 idler pulley did not make interference with my 1982 clutch fan.

Good luck.

PS : I can not wait to finish my project :)
