What is the rated amp output of my stock BJ42 alternator?

I'd like to have more output, i'Ve seen a post here with many alternator that could be used that has the vaccum pump. Can't seem to find it.

Also can a rebuilder rewire the alternator for higher output?

i beleive it is 40amp Eric? could be wrong, I talked to the guy who just sent me my new parts to rebuild my vacuum pump and he said it could be rebuilt but it would not be a huge increase? maybe another 15 amps?

I called a rebuilt guy just after my post and this is exactly what he told me. But also mentionned that the output mostlikely have dropped since it was new.

I saw a thread and post here with a bunch of possible replacement.

Search for "Hitachi" here in the diesel section. There should be some links in those threads to a site where you can find 12v and 24v alternators with vacuum pumps.

Here are 2 24V hitachi i've found. Now i need to find how the OEM is mounted. Anyone have info on the original alternator on a BJ42?

stock BJ42 is 20A @ 24V

For the record, here is the name plate on a Bj42 24v alternator

Well i took 2 hours off work yesterday and went to the alternator shop in montreal. We went throught all is catalogue and we just couldn't find anything that would ba complete, (with pump), and 24V, and with the correct spacing to fit the block support.

He told me that they should be able to rewire it to provide high output. I trusted the guy so i told him to go ahead.

They just called me and they say it runs now 45 amps! wouhou! Rebuilt and rewire 250$ CDN! he says he have proof of the result and will show me.!

So i'm going to pick up 2 new batteries, and i'm going to be able to haul anyone ass one after the other. Replacing planetary in the winch will be done this summer, (cause they are expensive), unless i blew it up before then!.

Nice Eric, is there a diff in amps between the 12V and 24V? I dont know too much about the diff between the voltages in these vehicles but I was told my alt was 40amp?

Rob

Typically a 24v alternator only needs to put out half the current of a 12v to produce the same amount of energy.

A 12v 3B stock alternator is usually 40 amps.

They test it before the upgrade and it was at 19-20 amp. That is about 40 amp on 12v. Pretty weak for todays standard. But a diesel doesn't need alot of current to run.

I think i was lucky the rebuilder sent the stator to a sub contractor to get rewired, and luckly the sub contractor had in hand the exact same stator but rated at 45 amps. I was suppose only to get it some time next week, but got it next day.

got it, thanks Rufus, Eric I just watched your video of ur rig in the snow, that was great! I so wish mine was back together, I miss driving it now.

Now that this thing will mostlikely output twice what is was design, i need to at least check on the wire size going to the battery. I think running 45 amp through a 10 ga wire is not wise at all. If you look on the electrical drawing, from what i see i would only need to have a bigger wire to replace the one shown from B on the alternator to the fuse block that has only 3 fuses and on the battery.

Does that make sens?.

I have to talk to the alternator rebuilder, because now i have 2x threaded stud on the top of the alternator instead of only one for the neutral.

I was expecting this, since the rebuilter told me the new stator may require a bit more rpm to kick in. And i notice that. Now is there a sttandard pulley (small that could be insalled so my alternator rpm is higher?

Where do you get at stock 24V-65A alternator, and does it fit on a stock BJ42 alternator bracket?

Good question Wayne.

That alternator-specification data came from my B-diesel manual.

My guess is that the higher output alternators were fitted to the same engine (a 2977cc B) but for a different model vehicle (not a landcruiser).

You seriously do not want to pay the amount toyota is asking for a alternator. Granted 24V @ 85A would be serious s**t tho.

BTW what is a coaster?
