So,

If you know my plight, my HG recently blew after a stint of brief overheating. My overflow tank was full of scalding water & blew coolant until my radiator was empty.

Thinking my thermostat was clogged & knowing that was the easiest fix, I started there. This morning I finally got around to removing my thermostat. Well, I thought I was, however no thermostat was present! Yikes

The amount of rust in the housing is enough to make a grown man cry:

My heater lines are also rusted out. This damn engine refresh is getting expensive:

Lol, thanks Beno!

Naturally I did what any Cruiserhead would do. I made a trip to Sears & got a few different wire brush tips for my trusty dremel, grabbed a case of Miller Light Thinking Fluid and went to work:

Welcome to lack of coolant/cooling system maintenance...

Good luck with the repair$

cheers,
george.

I had a lot of rust in my cooling system as well, I also suffered a HG failure. After my HG repair I bought a product called EVAPORUST from northern tool. its biodegradable and safe for all metals. I emailed the company back and forth a few times before i decided to fill my entire cooling system with evaporust. i drove the truck for a few weeks with nothing in the cooling system but evaporust. I live in Florida and i had a new fan clutch and all new hoses. The inside of my radiator is rust free now but that's the only part i can see the inside of since the HG repair. good luck!

Those hard lines don't look too bad. You need to flush this system a bunch of times to get the crap out. After things start to run clear, you can start replacing parts like hoses and water pump, etc.

A little dremel action & it looks 100% better.

Question though, with that much pitting on the thermostat housing should I go ahead & replace the entire housing as PM?

Going off your pic I would think it will seal fine. You could prob. get it plained down at a machine shop also.

That sure was some rust in there. DAMN the PO. Mine had a tiny bit of rust but after flushing the system very well it was good as new.

Beno, PM me the price plz

That's not bad. How about all of the sensors on the top & bottom? I'm going to replace those as well...

PS sensor is discontinued (water temp switch for EFI).

DS sensor (water temp sensor for EFI) is still available.

The bimetal vacuum valve is available still.

A few minutes with a flat file and a bench vise and that surface will be flat as new. There is a trick to it, but not much different than using a wood plane on a piece of wood. Find a full size flat file and handle. Medium or fine will both work well.

Finly starting to get a little milkshake in my oil, and I cannot drain it where it sits. Suggestions??

I was going to say belt sander at first but felt a bit ghetto. Haha. I do have a large belt sander mounted upside down in a crattle that I made. Works great for flattening stuff, sharpening stuff, and all kinds of other stuff.

A flat file would work great. Tools are only as good as the hands that hold them.
