I'm new. I picked up a 92 fj80 for a truggy I am building with my grandson (15 years). We are building an external cage, small lift, 35's and bobbing it to make a 4 seater with a an 18" pickup bed. I would like to know if these diffs are elocker type. If so, Why is there no switch on the dash? Thanx in advance, I'm sure you will be hearing a lot from me!:)

As far as I know.

In the US, E-Lockers started as an option on 93 + Land Cruisers.

Yours being a 92 would not have that option available at the time.

Please verify year on driver door sticker.

As for the diffs being e-locker type, I cant tell, I'm sure others will chime in, but the only way that they would be, would be:

1. It's not a '92
2. Not original Diffs
3. Not an US model??? (not sure here)

But that rear Diff, looks e-locked to me....

Those fender flares don't look like a 91-92.

Sure it's not a 93 model year with a late 1992 build date?

Oh, and welcome. :)

Looks like that actuator is not hooked up, or am I seeing that wrong?

Those are e-locker diffs for sure, but on the rear there, It looks like there's no wiring to it. Can you look at the front for any wiring to the actuator motor? And as was already mentioned I don't believe that lockers were an option until '93. Maybe someone retrofitted these into your truck and never finished the job. Does the rear axle have disc or drum brakes? Is there a center diff lock switch on your dash?

Take a pic of the Door Sticker and post it on here.
(might have to put it on a pic sharing site like photobucket since you have a low post count.)

I just went out and snapped a picture of my rear axle/actuator. The guard is in the way, but you can see the location and some of the wiring that it appears you are missing.

For curiosity's sake, post up a picture of your data plate.

If your rig came with locked axles, the axle code would be K294. If not, it would be K292. I threw up a pic of mine as well.

The door sticker mnfg. date is 06/92. It also has 4 wheel discs (one of the things I was looking for for this project). I can't believe how fast you guys got back to me, I was planning on looking for a reply tomorrow! Thanx again, L.B.

Look at the bottom of the sample data plate pic above.

Look under barcode see where it says k294?

What does yours state?

It says "k292". If they are not elockers, than what are those accuators bolted to the housing? L.B.

One more thing just after the K292 and the tranny code.

Does it say FJ80 or FZJ80?

it says fzj80 on the bottom and the top date says 12/96.... looks to be a 96? it def is not a US spec 92. Does the front girll say TOYOTA?

:D you are looking at Yohavos Data Plate not the Original Poster named "Camino" :D

Those are e-locker diffs, looking like someone swapped them in and didn't do the wiring. If you have 4 wheels discs, which also weren't available until '93, then someone swapped in the complete running gear from a newer rig. Your axle probably also have abs sensors that are not wired in.

And Yes the "center diff locker switch" is in the middle of dash. L.B.

Up now, with the info posted so far I would also lean towards this opinion. I cant see the front diff too well though. Remeber the '92 had front discs brakes, so I cant go on assuption on just the brake type for the front diff.

At least I know that the rear is an e-locker diff, if you have an FJ80 and not an FZJ80 then the previous owner swapped diffs in the past. You would still need all the locker wirring harness and Diff ECU to make them work.
At leat you got the locking Diff, that's one giant step foward in your build.

I cant logically reason why a previous owner go to the extent and costs of swapping both diffs and not completing the work, for now I will assume only the rear is e-locker, unless you guys can confirm the fact by the pics alone. (I cant on the front diff pic)

I can't seem to post the sticker picture (I have exceded my attatchments) this truck also has toyota 16x8jj rims, and the sticker says "15x6jj" rims. Maybe it is a hybred junkyard fj80. no Salvage title though. L.B

Nah, it's sounding like a 1992 that someone put a newer rear axle on. (At least the rear, possibly the front?) Does your front axle have an actuator on it as well?

This isn't unheard of, as the newer trucks had the E-Lockers as an option and all came with Full Float rear ends, and rear disks.

There are a few things you're going to need to do to get the lockers working if it's a complete system off of an FZJ80. This has been fairly well documented around here, and you should be able to get the bits you need from junk yards and fellow mudders.

If they just did the rear axle, it should be a much simpler process of simply wiring an appropriate switch up to the rear actuator.

I've attached some pages from the EWD for factory diff locks on a newer rig.
