With no metal handy today I decided to start my spare tire mount based on some other members threads. However I first decided to remove the hitch as I have no intention of pulling a trailer of any significant weight behind the 91 3fe. While pulling it I begin to notice that each end had the approxmiate angle and material to hold the spindle. I also realized that I could use the existing mounting holes, bolts and welded nut. So, out came the chop saw to prove my theory.

Placing it up next to the frame I see that the bolt holes line up and it appear to fit without affecting the factory corner bumper mounting holes. next step was to cut the extended mount off where the third hitch bolt would go so that it would clear the factory body mount. I then did a test fit bolting the two lower bolts and tooks some measurements, so far so good.

Realizing that the two factory bolts would not be enough I drilled the back of the plate on the side to place another bolt using the factory square hole on the side of the frame, I used a 3" x 4" 3/16 plate on the inside of the frame to distribute the load. At the point of this mount there was still a small gap between the hitch and the frame. To keep the frame from pulling out when tightening the bolt I placed a steel tab that I had with a hole in it passing the bolt through taking up the gap the bolting everything together.

From there I cut off the end of the square tube to the proper length. The heat of the day put a stop to the rest of the work. I am very happy with the result and amazed at how easy this was. The other half of the hitch will also provide me with another mounting point on the other side for extras if I so desire.

Part of what inspired this is the portability of the mount. I currently have a 1991 3fe and while this is fine for now the prospects of some day upgrading to a 93-97 is out there and being able to unbolt this mount and move it was a priority.

As far as strenght goes I weight in at 250 and I can stand and jump on the mount with minimal flex, overall I am very happy and surpise how easy it was. From here my build will be just like the others with limited variation. I thought this part was interesting enough to post.

Pretty nifty use of the old hitch. I like thinking outside the box and this definitely fits. Post some pics of the finished product when your done.

I like your ingenuity! Most of us who want a tire carrier have a factory hitch so this is a pretty cool way to get started. Thanks for sharing.

Some progress now that the heat is starting to abate, decided to continue with the other side using the other half of the receiver hitch.

First spindle mounted.

I could have done a better job getting it vertical. However, since the spindle mount is only bolted on I was able to shim it and get the spindle vertical.

hmm. nice idea if you plan on keeping the factory bumoer. good work

Your spindle might flex when you add the swing arm. I welded my 4x4labs spindle up and had to eventually pull the bumper off to weld the bottom of the spindle to the shell. I could put my finger through the bight jack hole and feel the bottom of the spindle flex.

Looks like to might have welded the spindle directly to the top of the metal. In just my opinion I would add several gusstets to keep the flex down. It seems solid now, untill you add the tire.

BTW I like your thinking of how you did it. Alot of measuring went into that. You have alot of patience.

Rwhat, there is some flex but it is the hitch mount and not the spindle. The spindle was welded the sleaved with some .120 wall tube and welded again. I will be adding some gussets to the spindle before everything is done. For shear simplicity the hitch mounts has been great.

93yotasr5, I am doing this on the cheap, someday I would like a bumper but for now this works.

More progress:

This is not the finished product as I plan on some gussets and brackets to better hold the vertical 2x2 but for now it holds a tire.

The angle is 10 degrees.

I intended to have it about 2" higher but for now this will do. I can always adjust later.

Dude! This is a great design!

Nice idea, I was just thinking about how to get my a cheap rear tire carrier, and it seem that you have come up with a great solution! I may be stealing this idea....

Really great idea! You could prob use the same line of thought to add skid-plating underneath to prevent the bumper from having to take the full weight of the vehicle if you mis-judge the departure angle.

Can I ask what you're planning to use as a latching mechanism?

Produce these!

This is a great idea!
I can't mount my tire undernieth the truck, because it's too big (33" going to 35" soon). So without a tire carrier I have to store the spare in the trunk where it takes up LOTS of room :frown:
Although I like the rear bumpers available, I just find them overkill for what I need -- something simple to carry one spare tire and possibly my Hi-Lift Jack. I also like the idea of saving weight, because then I don't have to buy spacers or heavy OME springs to conteract the additional weight.
I'll send you my rear hitch that I just took off and pay you to make me one! Then you can make some money to pay for that expensive rear bumper you want

My custom latch. I beveled the pin so that it auto latches when closing the tire mount. Also, the mount rests on the based of the latch mechanism so that the weight of the tire and mount will be supported when on rough roads etc. Altough the welding is crap, the latch very securly holds the tire carrier with little movement. There is a washer welded on the pin to the left of the spring which keeps the pin in place.

The rear is about 99% finished, just some final details and to finish the high lift mount, the hitch mounts have worked great.

Next up:
Sliders
Roof Rack and RTT
Winch integrated into factory bumper
5.29's (it really needs them now)

looks good! whats the ladder for?

Lots of reasons, access to put gear on the roof rack (to be added shortly), a mounting point for the highlift and for the rotopax and for me and my lawn chair when I want a better view.

Still deciding in roof rack type and length altough, I like the folding ATV ramp idea, heavy duty yet keeps the weight down.
