I really like the retro look for whatever reason. I assume they will fit but I don't know for sure. If they do, where can I get a pair and for how much?

Thanks!

So they're not just a direct swap?

Sheldon at G&S Cruiser Parts has a new pair of those sitting in his shop. Last I looked at them he was really liking the retro look and considering installing them in his 80 conversion...I don't know if he's still thinking of doing that or not...so they may be for sale. If any mods need to be made, it might be just adapting the connectors for the bulbs...

Send him a PM.

I like the sound of that. Thanks.

IIRC, you have to change the marker lights as well. I don't think they're available in the US, so you'd need to source them (Canada, Middle East, Central/South America, or Japan).

Personally I'd love to swap mine out, especially if they throw more light. I hate the dim light of the low beams. High beams are awesome, almost as good as driving during the day. Low beams have me reaching to make sure my lights are actually on.....

For fit reasons? Or does it make a difference that I swapped the turn signal and marker light bulb sockets?

IIRC...Sheldon's set was complete with the marker lights...but you'd have to talk to him to make sure...

Do you have his username? I'm having a bit of trouble finding anything with the search. Unless of course I can contact him directly through gscruiserparts website

Fit reasons I believe.

The G&S website will work too.

With your FJ80, wether you go with the 12H-T (like I did) or 1HD-T, you're looking at motor mounts minimum. 12H-T's seem to be rarer than hen's teeth these days...you might have more luck with a 1HD-T if you're thinking Toyota turbo diesel.

My guess would be less usable light, possibly much less. Bulbs being equal the biggest factor in light output is reflector size and shape. Round = better, bigger reflector = better. Those smaller old school rectangular lights were known to produce poor output.

I have John Deere bulbs in my stock lights, nice improvement.

Aside from the aesthetics if you're into the retro look, I think that the biggest advantage of the separate square lenses is how cheap it would be to replace them should a rock smash one or two.

I also have the HIR bulbs in my factory FJ80 lights, and I'm very pleased with the output.

Didn't even think about that... Sweet!

I have the John Deere bulbs as well, which are a very nice improvement. I still think the output sucks. I have good vision as well, so it's not me being blind as a bat.

Reflector size is part of the game, but if you could get a more powerful bulb in there....dunno what they even take, but I can't imagine it can be any worse.

My old Toyota MR2 and my folks Tercel took the square lights, both of them were brighter than the Cruiser is IMHO, and they had smaller lights to boot (at least on the Tercel, the MR2's light is quite large). Part of that is a low slung car with the lights aimed farther out, but even taking that into consideration the light output on low still sucks.

What's odd to me is that the high beams have great output, it's like driving in the day. I don't think I've ever driven a vehicle with that large a difference between low and high.

Ditto. My low beams suuuuuuuck but my highs (combined with my 55w PIAAs :D ) will burn people's eyes from their sockets

I guess you've never driven a 1990's Mazda MPV van. My dad used to have a 1994 MPV, and same thing...can barely see anything with low beams, and high beams were great.

Just spoke to Sheldon...he's still at work, but he thinks he has a couple of sets...one new and one used. They take H1 and H4 bulbs, so you will need to make an adapter for your factory plugs meant for the 9006/9005 bulbs. These are simple enough to make.

Sounds like at any time, you can just buy the Hella kits/lenses and they will fit into this housing. I guess the only thing left is what $$ you were thinking in your head about these parts. They are rare, so I imagine they won't be inexpensive.
