Drove up from montreal to toronto friday and everything was fine. Was driving from Scarborough to Burlington and started hearing an intermittent grinding noise. Here's my best attempt to describe the sound/feeling:

- sounds like driving on the shoulder when you hit those ribbed grooves on the right.
- also kinda sounds like the imp ace wrench when putting tires on
- tapping the brake sometimes made it stop, sometimes not.
- tapping the gas made it stop more often than tapping the brakes
- i tried putting it in neutral to see if it would stop while it was happening but it did not
- while accelerating i did not seem to have the issue, only while coasting with accelerator pressed or while slowing down
- i tired to check everything i possible could see and don't see anything
- oil levels looked good
- all oils where recently done
- Front knuckles rebuilt within last year
- pulled in to the nearest garage and will go back tomorrow at nine am to see whats up

I'm worried it's something gear related either diff or transfer case

Any help or input appreciated

Had a similar issue. Turned out to be a badly worn set of rear brake pads. Rebuilt the calipers, replaced the rotors and pads and presto the noise was gone!:bounce:

I hope and pray that its something so simple...was your issue also intermittently weird like mine????

Haven't had any personal experience with it, but:

Sure sounds like the relatively common dry spindle bushing issue.

Search and you'll find lots of info on it.

Sure hope that's all it is. What kind of job is this for canadian tire to fix? Is it manageable for them. I need to get home and without a huge bill...:crybaby:

I wouldn't let Crappy Tire touch anything that I own! Doesn't matter how much cheaper they may be!!!!

I don't have much of a choice unfortunately as I need to go back to work in Montreal... Nothing else open...just need to get home then will have it all checked out with a fine tooth comb...

Symptoms do sound like it could be some sort of bearing or bushing issue. I just finished going through my PS front, R&R everything -- except the bushing -- and presto no more grinding.

Well, saga continues...Canadian tire didn't even want to touch it, so at laeast they were honest about having no clue. Searched and searched for a garage with experience but as its sunday everything is closed to drove it to the nearest stealership and will go back at 7:30 am when they open and hopefully they can take care of the bushing(s)

More news to come.

If they diagnose it take it somewhere else to get it fixed if possible. Dont let them pull the "Its too unsafe for us to release the vehicle to you!" trick.

That would be great but I'm only here visiting so i hope someone can give me a recommendation for a garage thats not too far from where i am otherwise I'll probably have to bite the bullet...don't want to drive around and cause more damage if i can avoid it.

Truck is currently in near Lawrence and Allen road

I would suggest posting on the Upper Canada Land Cruiser site club. Someone there must know a good garage/mechanic. Good Luck!

It sounds to me like it might be one or more of the U-joints making noise. Go to a lube shop and ask them to grease the 4 U-joints (the grease nipples are mounted on the spiders) with a bunch of grease, but make sure they either leave the slip joint alone or only put in 3 or 4 pumps so as to not overextend the driveshaft. See if that solves it.

x2 on the UCLC recommendations. There are a bunch of guys all over the GTA.

No shops open for me to go to that i could find...have posted on the upper canada forum, no answer yet. Will keep trying.

shoot, sorry to hear bout the situation. if you had to go to a toyota stealership then maybe check out downtown toyota on queen, just east off the DVP...

Downtown Toyota - Home of new and pre owned vehicles

at least they give us discounts on parts, just say your a UCCLC member..and try and talk to Malik at least in the parts dept. and just plead with them to be honest and straight up...that's IF you had to. the other guys i know aren't close to the GTA...that'd be Wayne/crushers but he's 2 + hours away and Landblazer (Brad) who's in acton, but he's got a shop/lift. again, waay west of where you are. i hope someone else can chime in.

keepin my fingers crossed that it's a simple fix...may the cruiser gods have mercy and get you back on the road and back home..:)

Thanks for the info, I'll see if I can get it that far... Thanks for the good vibes, crossing my fingers and toes too

A little update:

At Yorkdale Toyota finally on Dufferin and Lawrence as this is as far as I could go without wanting to cry from the noise, can't stand hearing my baby scream like that.

Anyway, the service manager and all the staff have been very nice and very receptive. I have the shop foreman working on my truck, and I was able to speak with him to explain the situation and talk to him about the knuckle, spindles and grease which after looking at the truck he concurs with.

The one time I don't bring my FSM with me they need it....anyway, he was able to get it printed from somewhere but ended up with two different schematics one calling for oil and one for grease. Told him I was sure it was grease he needed to put in there and even showed him Romers post about Axle service. Very nice guy and very open to what I had to say and the article. He's actually from Guyana and has worked on these trucks in the past...I'm rambling now.
Once he's done with the grease we're going to drive it around and see if it stops and go from there....

Once again, appreciate all the support and info you guys have given me. Will keep you posted on my progress.

He can access the service manual for the 91-97 Land Cruiser via the Infostream service, guaranteed. While it won't have any of the engine info for a diesel, the suspension/axle/driveline info should be the same.

Have you greased the U-joints?

Thanks Adam, he did get the FSM pages. He's filling the knuckles now and I'll have him do the u-joints as well just to be sure.

Thanks.

Make sure he smears some grease on the brass spindle bushing too while he's filling the knuckles.
