I get in my truck turn the key, and notta... no clicking, no starting. Battery is fine. After about 20+ tries it starts right up and continues to start right up for weeks. Then again, same thing. Turn the key, silence. after about 10 min. starts right up.

Also been noticing a short delay in startup after turning key. like 1-2 sec delay between turning the key and the engine turning over.

I am 100% positive that the battery is fine. its fairly new and terminals are tight. should i start digging a shallow grave for this starter?

Thanks.

Sounds like it, or it may be the contacts. I am going through basically the same thing, except mine clicks some times. I went ahead and ordered a new starter from CruiserDan. I was going to buy the contacts and rebuild it, but what the hell. I have 230k miles on my 93 LC and I dont know if it has ever been replaced or rebuilt.

what did a new one cost from cdan?

That is classic starter contact issues. A rebuilt starter will fix, but a new set of contacts and plunger will fix it for $20 instead of $150.

Yup had the same issue and bought a new one. I don't remember the new starter being that bad from CDAN. Normally, the issue happens when the starter gets hot, IE the truck won't start after it's been running for a while. I bought a rebuilt Toyota OEM one from CDAN and keep the old one in my truck as a trail spare.

The new one from CDan was 188. I figure I will get it swapped out and rebuild the other one later for an "extra."

thanks for the info guys.

Did you get it fixed/replaced? I got my starter from CDan on Tuesday and changed it last night. It was really easy, but a little bit awkward getting to the top bolt. I had never done it before so I had to figure out the best way to do it. Pretty simple. Fired right up no problem! Good luck.

Pull the starter, and disassemble the starter solenoid. Clean it out and lube up the plunger and the shaft and you might fix it with nothing out of your pocket. I was having the same problem in my 60, and put up with it for about a year. Kept a hammer handy and would tap on the solenoid housing whenever needed. When I pulled it apart, it was apparent that things were pretty gunked up. Simply cleaning things up fixed it. Didn't even need new contacts.

Good luck!

havent messed with it yet. its easy to put off because it only happens once in a while. i will however attempt to fix it before buying a new one. looks like its hard to get to though.
