This has been covered before, but apparently I wasn't paying attention.

Add these to the list of items to check every time the wheels are off. I lost the top bolt off the left front today. I would have never realized it until I went to back up and the caliper housing jammed into the wheel. At first I thought I was dragging a driveshaft on the ground. She wouldn’t even roll backwards on a hill. Pulled the wheel and the bottom one was only hand tight. Found a temporary replacement (glad I have an assortment of metric bolts) and TGAPJH has a complete set of 4 on its way to me. Right side was as tight as could be.

This could have been a lethal experience for me as I had just gotten back from picking up 3 new Swampers. My trailer was loaded with 4 36” Swampers on rims and 1 unmounted (for Mike Stevens), so this might have been a pretty ugly scene on the highway.

Remember to check yer nutz.

Never had a problem, but something to think about. thanks, Mike

Use loctite and torque them up correctly, should prevent this problem.

How many ft-lbs did you last torque them to?

iirc, 90 ft-lb. The trouble is that the space for the top bolt was so tight, I could not fit in my 1/2 torque wrench, ended using 3/8 drive torque wrench which only ranges up to 100 ft-lb.

Yes, JH, I will definitely re-torque them next time I have the wheel off. By the way, I did use locktie and anti-seize on them. (Have anyone tried to torque them w/o wheel off? It might work too).

This has happened to me, you can torque to spec all you want but you should still carry the spare parts. They only cost $2.00.

Been there and done that last fall after an axle re-build. Had to hunt for 14 hours in my wife's mini van, with 4 kids and a Yorkie. What a site we were. Nothing like changing a diaper with blaze orange on, with a 30.06 leaning up against the remote slider side door. Unloaded of course :hillbilly:

x2 Maybe I'm misunderstanding 12MPG's post but are you saying you torqued them correctly, used loctite and still had them loosen?

Mine came loose shortyl after I bought it. I wasn't the last person to touch it. I am just saying it is cheap insurance in addition to proper tightening.
