With a driver's side window that barely made it up in last year's cold weather, I decided it was time for a new glass run before this year's cold weather took full effect. I used some silicone spray to get by until recently, but with cold weather approaching, I didn't want to get stuck out with a stuck widow.
A call to cdan took care of obtaining the new glass run. Thanks, Dan.
Before installing the part, I decided to baseline the driver's side close speed against the passenger's side window close speed.
Before replacing the glass run: The DS closed about 1 second faster than the PS.
After replacing the glass run: The DS closed about 5 seconds faster than the PS.
Removal / replacement of the glass run was straight forward once I got the window glass removed from the door.
The effect of the speed increase was enough for me to want to change out the glass run's all around. But before taking that on, I thought other things were in order while I had the DS door apart.
In taking the door apart to remove / replace the glass run, I wound up tearing the factory speaker paper in the process. Inspired by IdahoDoug's and Romer's write ups on their speaker installations, and inspired by the various Dynamat installations found here on Mud, I decided that there was no better time than now to replace my door speaker while adding some sound deadening.
I went with Polk db651 due to the fact that it has the same top-mount depth as the Pioneer's that folks have been successful in installing. I was very leery of having the speaker magnet touch, rub, or otherwise interfere with the window channel. So after a chat session with a friendly tech at Crutchfield, I had all the dimension data that I needed to ensure that the db651 would fit. The short top mount depth was key.
According to the Crutchfield data, the Polk db651 is only 0.040" taller (virtually the same to this engineer) than the Infinity 6022si, so based on Romer's Infinity installation, I felt confident that the Polk would fit my LX. What's interesting is that the db651s (shallow mount) had a greater top-mount depth than the standard db651. The slim grill is really where the S in shallow comes from with the db651s.
Here's an image of the "before" with the moisture barrier in place.
Here's an image of the "after" with the Dynamat in place. I can confirm that the door handle linkage functions normally and does not rub with standard or original Dynamat installed. Folded foam sheets were inserted into the holes where the door linkage and wiring harness penetrations break an otherwise perfect moisture barrier.
Finally, here's the image of the finished installation. I think the Polk db651 looks great. Also, the sound from the bass, mid's, and through to the high's is noticeably better than the stock Pioneer that's still in the PS door. The speaker is mounted on the door through the door panel. A 1/2" strip of self adhesive weather stripping takes up the gap between the door panel and the factory recessed metal speaker mount. I can't 100% swear in mud, hope to die, that the magnet doesn't touch the window channel. But I'm 95% confident that it doesn't even with the speaker grill screws firmly tightened. Proof is that my DS door glass still smokes the time it takes my PS door glass to close.
Just thought I'd share the installation; thanks for taking a look. Now all I have to do is carve out enough time to tackle the passenger side door.
