I am about to undertake putting a T04 62-1 Turbonetics turbo in my 97 FZJ80. I have read and read and read all of the threads on here about custom turbos and the one thing that I still am not sure of is intercooler placement. Dusty's placement is nice but, will this work on a stock cruiser without the lower valance removed? Dusty, how much of a job was it to move the grill out? My other thought was to lower the entire intercooler between the frame rails mounted just in front of the front cross member. This would be protected by my ARB bumper. I think the only option on routing the tubing is where Dusty ran his. Does anyone have any other ideas, thoughts, etc...

My frustration is the reason I asked if I could run without and intercooler and I still may until I can measure my intake air temperature minus the intercooler.

Also, I like Man-a-Fre's set-up as I'd like to keep my stock airfilter canister and not have to eliminate my Safari snorkel. I just wish I could see a better picture of how the ducting goes through the front of the vehicle. Any guesses on the size of the intercooler?

don't know which ROTW it was, but they used a second Safari Snor. on the DS as a mens of inducting air for the intercooler. Trick setup and proabaly very efficient.

MAF...There was a day when they said they were coming out with a Turbo for the 80. Unless otherwise, I don't think they are out with it yet and it's been a least a year. that's a whole other box of worms.

Snork it on the DS and let it breath, plus 2x the stares as with one snorkel

A tip from us diesel dudes. A intercooler from a high HP turbo can work well.
IE. Saab 9000, Audi A4

I am not sure on the CFM air requirements of your gas engines, but for use diesel guys they work well.
I am going to fit a Saab 9000 to my BJ74. If I still had my 80 series I would tried to fit one.

You could also look at using one off diesel truck (and older cummins perhaps).
Also, it may be obvious, but an intercooler must be infront of the RAD and AC in order to work right.

And a tip:
Stay away from the water-to-air intercoolers.
They do not work well. The only time they are good is in short races. I.E. Drag racing. Because then you can use ice-water and get your air temp colder than ambient air temp. Any application longer than 20-30 seconds and you are better off with air-to-air.

Cheers,
Nick

One option

Christo you are the man. That is exactly what I was talking about when I said lower between the frame rails. Do you have the dimensions on that intercooler? The smaller oil cooler looks to be an easy mod. Time to get back on Ebay and do some more shopping.

Does the intercooler hose entering on the drivers side go up to the throttle body?

Do they make a snorket that fits on the 80 series on the drivers side?

This kit uses the factory airbox and has a snorkel. Why do you want it on the other side?
Inlet is on the driver side, outlet is on the passenger side.

I don't have the dimensions and truck has left. Also, remember that is a plate style intercooler, not to be confussed with cheaper style like a radiator.

What is the most bang for the buck in intercoolers? Ebay has hundreds and I don't know one from the other.

It just looked like everyone was routing all on the passengers side. I'd be curious as to how it is plumber through the drivers side.

Look at this for proper placement, I dont think that it gets any more acceptable in terms of protection or ample airflow. HTH. Ohh, if you need more photos of the tubing let me know but it will take little time (weekend) to get to. Again, HTH.

Turbocruiser. More pics would help me out a lot. I will be patient as I know I am asking a lot. Thank you for the help.

Wowsers! It does not get any more apparent than that, that is terrific!!!   One question, the pic on the bottom, looks like the wheel well is coated in linex (great idea) and it also looks like the tubes are in aluminum (another great idea) what rig is that there CM!?!?!

That's Photoman's supercharger intercooler, 3" tubing all the way. I routed mine the same way but even a bit higher so there's a lot less of my fenderwell there. I'll try and post more pics when I get time. Somewhere before I've re-posted the actual part number for the Spearco intercooler that Photoman used since he doesn't post all that often. It fits pretty much exactly like the APS Safari one does. Mine is a PWR version mounted in the same place and I used the RX-7 turbo oil cooler below it and between the frame horns for the transmission cooler, again pretty much exactly where the APS Safari system mounts theirs. The RX-7 cooler is well documented for its usefulness and is really well made and lots of them floating around ebay.

This helps a lot. I was wondering if I could run some of the plumbing in the fender area like photoman's, now the wondering ends. I think this will make the install much easier.

Clown, I looked and couldn't find that Spearco part number. I guess I can take some measurements and see what is available for my application.

Hmm....me like it Christo...its beautiful, I been thinking to ship the whole truck to your shop ;)

I think that often! It's my checkbook that keeps it from happening.
