I need to see some pics of STOCK double cardan drive shafts on cruisers please. No cut/turn SOA trucks please. I want to see specifically the stock (ish) angle between the diff and the DS. Thanks...

Oh man, I just went out and took a picture but then read that you wanted to see one stock. Mine is SOA. Are you trying to just see what the angle is?

Yes... Thanks though...

NO ONE here owns an FJ62 that can take a couple of snaps for me?

Mark, the double cardon front shaft was only on 81-early85 60 series, the ones with the short transmission. :meh:

So you want to see drive shaft at the front diff?

Yes.

Long story short: everything I read says that when ADDING a DC shaft to a truck the non-DC end of a DC drive shaft should have approx 0 degree angle - that is the DS and the diff pinion flange should be perpendicular... and to achieve that the axle needs a cut and turn.

I don't believe that this is the case in the stock FJ60 DC arrangement and I want to see what is going on in (relatively) stock form.

Thanks

Mine has 2" lift, and Double Cardan front shaft, though not sure what or if diff angles are changed and what is factory or not, I bought it already. I can get a photo tonight if it will help you still.

Yes please.

Hi Mark,
I've got a 2" lift front, 3"? rear.... here's a photo showing the front diff. Looks like a 0º angle there... kinda dark tho, I can take another picture if you like....
This is my first attempt at uploading a pic, hope it works.
Cheers

Yes it DOES look like 0º... how is that achieved? Is the front axle of an early FJ60 (with DC shaft) different than that of a later (non-DC) FJ60 in the stock angle of the diff?

I don't have the historical background to say... HOWEVER here is a pic of the front diff on my '77 FJ40... (I guess the PO or a bad mech. swapped the ends on drive shaft... one more thing on the list to do) for comparison... it also has been lifted, so that looks not 0º :meh:

This is as I would expect on a non-double cardan driveshaft arrangement: the diff flange perpendicular-to-horizontal (to match the perpendicular-to-horizontal flange of the transfer case) and both ends of the driveshaft making an angle.

Ah, I learn something new everyday!
But now I'm confused... re-reading this thread, '81-early '85 had the short transmission w/o spacer (for future H55) and the series from then up to the end of 60-62 series had the non DC driveshaft? (what 3_puppies said). I understand a little. Gonna have to look at one of the early FJ60 fronts. Anyone got a pic? I had no idea there was such a subtle change...

That is correct. "long" transmission 60s got the standard DS, "short" ones got the DC shaft... presumably because the front is shorter and steeper than in those with the long trannys.

But my question is about the angles of the DS and diff - is there a difference in these 2 scenarios?

Great question, seems to be relevant to a range of lift above 3" or larger tires / wheels, but I am at a loss to answering it.
