The midwest must be the equivalent of landcruiser hell, with the Southwest being the promised land.
I came upon the following having saved some pennies and decided to work on the body, mostly
planning on doing a rear quarter panel chop. I discovered these last weekend and the initial shock
is now subsiding. I intend to replace the various holes with sheet metal. I know how to weld a little
bit and I hope I get better as I go along. I will probably start at the rear and move forward. I guess
it goes withoud saying when welding in the rear the gas tank has to be removed? That should be fun....

It starts getting painful right about here.

All the favorite spots. Are those rust bubbles under the sound deadening tar in the last pic? Mine is smoother than that

wow, you need to look for a rust free LC shell. There is a rust free one in Alabama in the for sale section...

I am thinking they are. I will be peeling that stuff soon. Depenindg on what I find I may have some tough decisions to make.

The thought had occurred to me. Due to it condition however one quote I received was $850, and the other was over $900. Seem like a lot of money to ship one, but its not like I'll find one around here.

It's not pretty, but it is not to far gone. It will be getting some love as well. The bubbly stuff on the sound deadner does not appear to be rust as I used a steamer and pealed up bunch last night. I should be cutting the old junk out this evening and going to get some sheet metal. I saw Kevins Morrowlands under seat storage thread and it got me to thinking about what options I have. I will probably cut out the bad and replace, but it would be pretty sweet to have the storage, although that is a lot of work and my list of things to do is getting long.

lol...how is the frame this time?

I'm in the same boat man, but I've already had to repair my failing frame twice. I hate living up north sometimes:bang:

Man I hate living in Arizona some times, oh wait, no I don't!

I think I am going to use cement epoxy paint, stuff used for basement floors and garages. I got the idea from the paint and body section.

Explain some more? How is that stuff better than herculiner or line-x?

I don't know per se that it is better than either. I think, could be wrong, that the linex is pretty pricey. Is herculiner a do it your self type of roll on application? I hope to clean the original carpet and reinstall, if that does not work, put carpet in similar to how Elliott did his. I figure if I use the epoxy paint stuff it will not be so rubbery like bedliner and more of water proof type barrier paint. A budy of mine did his basement with the stuff, we moved/pushed a pool table across it and it did not scuff or scratch. Oh, its also a little different. :meh:

Well I've cut out a good deal of the rust after removig the factory sound deadner stuff. I am leaving it be in the cargo area but in the passenger compartment, front seat and back it has been removed. I started using a small household steamer and quickly learned that it would be slow going. I employed an air hammer and chisel and it cut through like butter, much easier. I am taking a 5 day weekend coming up here in a few days and hope to get to the welding part. Where the floor is cut in the drivers side the sheat metal has ridges, I am thinking when welding in the patch welding along that line is going to be a pain, will I have to shape the patch piece to match these ridges or will be possible to hammer that line flat so to speak to be welded flush with patch. Hmm.....

That's rusted about to the extent of my bj60, but my pinch weld along the top of the rear wheel well is rusted through completely. I've got a lot of work ahead of me.

was there rust at the very back on the floor, where the tailgate rubber gasket attaches?.
