spector offroad says "Specter does not offer rebuilt power steering pumps. The original Toyota front pump body does not have a replaceable bushing in it. To rebuild the pump correctly, the housing needs to be machined for a bushing and the bushing needs to be honed to match the pump shaft. Rebuilding these pumps this way would make the cost of the remanufactured pump comparable to the new Toyota pump. "

You see the other thread here about buying a new mount to use a GM saginaw pump. They said all the factory hoses work. It sounds like a good alternative. A lot of car parts places get their rebuilds from the same place so it doesn't matter sometimes. Ask them who rebuilds them when you call. I would just go to your local Napa so if you have a problem you can go back there and not have to mail it. Just keep your pump until you have the new one in and working and then take it back for the core. I put in a rebuilt pump along time ago and started it up after getting the air out to have it spray everywhere leaking out one of the front bolts. I have to pull it again and take it back. After I put in my rebuilt engine, I got a new one from Cdan so I wouldn't have to worry about it again. Just keep an eye on it. It can cause other problems if it starts to leak everywhere.

That's exactly what I have; cheap, reliable, shake a tree and probably one will fall off and the pump has lifetime warranty. The pump will go for about $50.00 and the pump mount for $160-170.:)

What About the Pulley size? and how hard to fab a mount?

You can go to a junk yard and pick up one with pulley, for the mount and pulley, you can get one at Man-A-Fre or any of the other vendors. Also there is a recent thread about a homebrew mount. :grinpimp: Mine uses the factory Toyota mount and the PO fabricated the adjuster (looks like from an alternator or another pump) that goes from one of the holes were it used to be the smog pump to one of the bolt holes in the pump.

Reviving this thread... need to figure out what to do with my power steering pump. I'm having to feed it fluid once a month and it's having trouble keeping up with my 33's. Is there a pump out there that can "bolt on" and can also keep up with the "demands" of 33" tires or bigger?

Totally. My issue is that I cannot build a custom bracket, and I have a feeling using an OEM would wear out in no time with the size tires I have. Unless someone thinks the OEM will keep up with 33's?

The OEM pump will keep up with 35"s or even bigger. I'd go with an OEM.

I disagree. I don't think the stock pump is up for the task. It struggles with larger tires. When wheeling, it has a hard time with tires in ruts, etc. I personally wanted even more boost just in parking lots. When my pump failed, I put on a rebuilt one from Napa. It was a mistake. Like others have said, these pumps really aren't rebuildable (if you want to do it correctly). Needless to say, it didn't last. I then went Saginaw. Awesome upgrade. Way more boost making turning larger tires a breeze. In my opinion, Saginaw pumps are superior to the ones that Mr. T provided. And I did it the lazy way and just bought the bracket, so it basically was just a bolt on operation. YMMV.

I've gotten lucky then, but mine has been fine handling 35s. Well it was when I had a 2f. Maybe the success can be contributed to my ram assist?

I think with 33s and below he shouldn't have any problems whatsoever. Heck the pumps are 30 years old, I would think a new one would be pretty stout. I have no clue what the price of an OEM unit is, but if it's ridiculous I could see a Saginaw being a solid upgrade.

Is there a thread or video detailing this kind of install? I don't have the capability to do any sort of modding. It needs to be an extremely small job for me to be able to do it.
CCOT OEM pumps are $520 :bang:

Don't hate me for asking but I haven't found this in any of the other saginaw threads...will the bracket and pump fit with all the smog equipment? And if so, I suppose this is more for me to find out and share, but I wonder if it would still fit on a 2fe'd 2f. Good info so far though...

To the point of the OP: Who should I stay away from?

A-1 Cardone should be avoided at all costs. For anything, but especially PS pumps.

Yeah, I'd still like to figure out the answer to this. I'm not interested in rebuilding the existing pump, or purchasing an original or OEM pump anymore. I guess I'd rather be safe than sorry. I'm not trying to have an all original cruiser, just one that will work well.

For a Saginaw swap I had the OEM pulley turned out to press fit the Saginaw shaft, $15 at a local machine shop. I had a pressure side hose made from a new Toyota hose, the hydro shop had the flare that fit the Saginaw, that was another $15 for the mod and the cost of the new hose (think I got that from Onur). I built my own pump mount, cost of that was basically $0 as I used scraps of steel I had from other projects.

I don't have a great pic of the setup handy, I could add one later.
