Hopefully this isn’t too stupid a question, so don't flame me too much. Want to drop the tranny this weekend so I can start the clutch replacement. Everything is disconnected from the tranny/transfer other than the 4 bolts to the bell housing. When I undo these bolts will the tranny-shaft just pull out or are there components under the bell that I need to disconnect first. Haynes didn't explain it well enough for this dumb ass. Thanks. :)

It just pulls out but it's fawking heavy. When I R&R my transmission, I use an engine hoist.

Pull the seats and the transmission cover, stick the crane through the doorway and use it to hold the weight of the transmission. You can then wiggle the transmission out and then lower it to the ground. I use a 2" wide strap to wrap around the transmission and hook it to the engine hoist.

Good Luck,

No hoist here. Going to try to use a jack underneath and straps up top from the roll bar. I know woody has said he can lift one and we seem to be about the same strength. Wish me luck, I may be writing Monday frustrated.

i all most blew out my back trying to put my H41/t-case in on a floor jack... i stoped and did it the right way with a engine host. If i ever have to pull it agin i will use an engine host there as well. Just some young 23year old full of piss and viniger

I'm 26. :flipoff2:

An engine hoist and some rigging to allow small rotation will help oh-so-much when putting it back in.

I have trouble moving the tranny/xfer assembly around the shop, I use an old skateboard.

Some friends and I did this with my 40 but with the extra weight of an Orion tcase. Just used ropes connected to the roll bar and some clever rock crawling rigging. It was a HUGE struggle getting that mess aligned so that the housing bolts could be put back in place. Next time I have to do this I will DEFINITELY use an engine hoist. Its easier on you and easier on your buddies that you bribe to come over and help...

Hopefully your tranny will seperate easily. I removed the engine and tranny together, took three guys and a whole lot of wigglin' and pullin' to get the tranny to let go. I don't think I could have done it with the engine still in the truck. Pilot bearing was frozen to the output shaft and stuck in the engine.

Tranny/xfr

Don't worry about getting it out. Gravity will do that for you. Just don't have any fingers and toes under it in case is slips off jack.

No kidding, transmission and transfer cases are man killers.

I would invest $120 in a engine hoist. It comes in handy more often than you think.

D@mnit! That is not what I wanted to hear! :crybaby:

Sorry to hi-jack but I'm getting ready to do the same thing.

Give me another example I can use to convince the wife. How much would it be to rent?

Buy the engine hoist!

Pepboys always have them on sale which is where I bought mine before I pulled my tranny for the Toybox install. I called around and the rental price turned out to be about $40 less than just buying one. Unless you work fast you will be renting the thing more than one day.

After struggling with that tranny/xfer combo even with an engine hoist I can't imagine trying to remove it without one. Let alone stab it back in.

Buy it. OR have a friend move to Florida and store his in your shop, like I did.

Just looked on the internet and pepboys had them for 185 and autozone for 220! That is exspensive.
