The new '86 2F came with a 4-speed tranny and split case t/c. I was originally planning on putting a H42 4-speed in a using my orginal vacuum t/c, however, it appears that the front input bearing is shot on the tranny I have. Here's my options:

1. Rebuild the H42 and use the vacuum t/c or
2. Use the 4-speed that came with the 2F and it's split case.

I'm not sure which is better but I'm looking to do things once, and the right way. I believe that there is a different spline count on each of the tranny's, otherwise I'd just switch them out-- I haven't confirmed this yet. Please offer up your opinions on which route I should go. Thanks in advance.

Yes, the spline count is different. I don't know what year your other transfer case is, but if it is not a split case, then they are not compatible. Split cases use a 19 spline input vs 16 spline for the earlier 4 speed cases.

Another thing to consider is that the split case does not have the parking brake on it. You will need to figure that out if you use it.

what year is your equipment that is being replaced?

make sure the output shaft on your original tranny is OK, then your cheapest option in the long run would be to rebuild your original equipment

swapping out your broken junk for someone else's broken junk is not usually a good thing.

buying compatible junk to rebuild, with the thought of reducing down time usually works.

I just swapped axles to 1976. The Man-A-Fre conversion kit listed for split case drums are no longer available. It's looking like I'll have to fab something from scratch or do a rear disc conversion. To be honest I'd rather put my $$$ towards something else then rear discs. Any ideas? I was kind of thinking about using the hardware off of 60 axles. Anybody have any experience with this?

Looks like Spectre is out of stock on the E-Brake conversion kit as well.

remote m/c

I found this: Anybody see an issue with using a remote m/c to activate just the rear drums? Here's a link on Mudd, post #16 IH8MUD.com - Page Not Found. Also found this on a blasphemous site: http://www.cj-8.com/forum/showthread...=parking+brake. Looks like those guys are pretty happy with it and for $50 + a bracket I'm entertaining the thought.
