Just a thought that I've been having lately ... has anyone ever seen, or made, a rear roll-cage that replaces both - the standard (FJ-40) Roll-bar AND the soft-top frame? Especially considering the OEM-style canvas tops made overseas (in addition to the Bestops), it just seems to be a natural concept.

Orrrr .... maybe I'm missing something?

I've thought about the same thing. I think it would be really cool. I hope someone has cause I would love to see some pics.

The thought that I'm having (now) is 2 uprights (hoops), with a single horizontal on each side (still have to figure out how high to mount the horizontals). Big ol' hunks of angle iron for the bases, of course.

Just thinking that I'm forgetting something (not good) about using the rollbars for roof hoops, though ...

I saw a custom top which just went over a "family" cage. Don't remember much about it as it was in 1992.

With a custom top and cage you could eliminate a bunch of extra hardware. Because of the difference in tubing diameter I don't see a good fit with anything commercially made.

I've contemplated extending my roof rack/rigid bikini top full length... and then making soft sides that can be rolled up. Or rigid sides that could be easily removed.

You probably could make one that would work if you made the hoop and added some smaller tube steel to the roll bar tubes. Main place I see is at the corner's where you will not likely be able to bend roll bar size tube at a similar curve to the roll bar hoop.

Look up Cirbo's '78 V8J40 buildup, he made a killer cage that had the soft top frame built-in.
