I recently bought a California Edition (Black Label) 1977 FJ40. It was missing all the smog stuff. You may remember this rig from my Hay stacking marathon.

But I do have a few questions.

I removed this stuff.

Holley 350 and header.

And all I did today was rake rocks and pull weeds. I did work on the Tercel yesterday, though.

So............... Where are your questions?

Question 1 beat my post. My answer: I don't know. (I know, I'm helpful)

Is this a stock 1977 California Edition Distributor?

According to the FSM as well as other manuals it is suppose to have a two port vaccum system similar to a later 2F or an FJ60.

No nipples at all on this one.

the red wire connects to the two switches on the bottom of the brake master IIRC.

that is not the correct vintage distributor(but there should be a hole for a copper tube for vac advance on the very end of the advace canister(pointed right at the oil filter). you could get away with a late 76-77 distributor. you dont want the 75/early 76 since it vac retard.

Looks like a small cap non-usa dizzy. There probaly was a nipple coming out the very end, very easy to break off.

Gonna agree with bucfan - looks like a small cap non-usa dizzy - vacumm advance requires ported vacuum - the one I had years ago had a very small brass line, can see how it would get busted off easily...

Question #2

Does this Red wire plug into the little connector in the carburetor as seen in the above photo?

the red wire connects to the two switches on the bottom of the brake master IIRC.

Are these the switches? If so, which one does it connect to?

(My 1976 FJ40 has rubber caps over the sensor electrical button spades.)

Is this the wrong one as well?

(welcome to California...)

Question #1

Where does this go and what does it plug into? I can't find any reference to it in the stack of manuals i have.

I'm going from memory here (and that's scary enough...) Does it have a "14" at the base of the fitting? I think that's the "throttle positioner" vacuum line, and if I recall, it goes to the little vacuum box on the fender there to a nipple with the same number. From that black box, a tube goes to the TP diaphragm, through a blue one-way valve, on the back of the carburetor. People say that's unnecessary, but I kinda liked mine, when it worked.

Your '77 has a lot more stuff than mine...

Oh: I have a non-USA dizzy (with a Pertronix ignition), I just disabled whatever vacuum line went to the retard port, and tried to make it look like it was meant that way...

:meh:
