hey guys im new today and should have joined a long time ago. i am 1974fj's BIG brother. He'll like that. I recently ran into a problem with my speedometer. i started out of my house the other day and noticed my speedometer not reading. great. after a few miles i heard a tapping coming from the instrument cluster. i pulled over to check and see if the speedo cable was connected correctly at the trany. nothing was wrong there. once home i checked the speedo cable and noticed the end at the cluster side was broken. i got a new cable and with the cluster out i plugged it in and used a power drill to test. nothing. doesnt want to turn. i then used pennatrating oil and car oil to try and lossen up any lock or sticky old oil. still no luck. any suggestions?

where to find the housing?

does anyone have the plastic piece im looking for? the plastic piece that the speedo cable plugs into on the back of the cluster?

will this work?

is it possible to take an aftermarket speedo and take it out of its housing and fab it to fit the stock cluster. one that fits the stock speedo cable and clip and then make a mounting bracket to fit the back of the number plate to look original?

also what is the rpm ratio in the cluster on the 77 landcruiser? 60 mph= 1600rpm? something like that.

Why not just get a "new" used one? Swapping it out is no problem. Did you take it apart and inspect the inside to see if all is ok?

Steal the one off your brothers truck!:D

Later,

haha i would if he were home. where would i find a new used one? ive posted in parts and havent gotten a response. coolcruisers and sor dont have parts anymore for the cluster. sugestions on where to find a used one? thanks

this is the part i need

the arrow is pointing to the part i need off the cluster. the male part of the speedo where the speedo cable plugs into the back of the cluster. i believe its the plastic piece that houses the magnet that spins with the spinning of the cable. i hope this helps explain what i need better. thanks

i just found another picture from another post of the part taken off the cluster. the part is circled. anyone know the name of this part or where to find it. sorry to keep posting so much. im headed to Florida next weekend and am trying to fix this issue before the trip.

i still havent found a good used speedo to swap out. for a temporary fix and possibly a more accurate speedo and an adometer that works im thinking about using a digital speedo and an electrinic speed sendor. if i am to do this what type of sendor would work with the Cyberdyne C270E351N gauge on my 77fj without any mods to the parking break area. thanks for your help. and please if anyone has a used working speedo assembly please let me know

I have a speedometer that I don't need now. That picture is from my post. I am swapping out the one with the big magnet for the one with the small magnet. I got it from SOR but had to go to the secret back room and test them personally.

I'll sell it to you for what I paid SOR for my "new" used one.
