So, I'm getting ready to do my engine swap with MPFI fuel injection. I have a carbed 350 currently and have a vapor lock issue I have never been able to eliminate. I am worried about fuel delivery for the new motor, 45PSI.

In the latest issue of 4x4 Builder magazine, they feature a auxillary tank for the EB that they modified to be able to put a Holley in-tank fuel pump. This thing is slick, it is just like most factory in-tank setups with a removeable fuel pump hanger assy ect...

They don't have the article on-line but think the regular aux tank with a port to add the in-tank pump.

I called and they have an aux tank for the 40, and would add the hanger assy. Tank/hanger assy/install kit/and fuel sender = $755.

Is this worth it?

Hi All:

I am not an expert on fuel tanks, but IMHO that is an expensive and over-engineered way to go.

Regarding the fuel pump, you just need a high-pressure electric pump, rated for the need of your FI system, and mounted nearby the tank. Look in the Summit Racing online, they lots of choices. An in-tank mounted fuel pump is an unnecessary (and harder to service) exercise IMHO.

I have a 'wheeling buddy with a 350 V-8/Turbo 350 running the Holley Projection system with the stock FJ40 under-the-seat fuel tank; no issues that I'm aware of.

If you want to switch to another tank underneath the frame, any number of tanks from other vehicles can be purchased used cheaply and easily adapted to work on a FJ40. I've personally seen fuel tanks from both Suzuki Samurais and Jeep CJs underneath 40 Series frames.

Good luck with your project!

Alan

If you can go with the in-tank option it's the better choice in two respects:
-longevity of the pumps tends to be longer because the fuel serves as a coolant.
- MUCH quieter.

have you checked these guys out ? www.tanksinc.com thay make an adapter to install a in-tank fuel pump in about any tank and it sells for like $215.00 i am doing a TPI install (tuned port injection) in my FJ40 and i am building a surge tank for mine, check this link to see http://www.sdsefi.com/techsurge.htm and if you can buy the book from www.jagsthatrun.com it has how to's and part numbers for pumps from GM and others and lots of info. also look at this http://bcbroncos.com/store/product_info.php and look in the fuel section for there version of a surge tank and the switch to cut off the fuel pump in the event of a crash or roll over. and check out these guys on pump info and request there free DVD set on fuel injection (its 3hours long) http://hotrodlane.cc/Instructions/Export1.htm and if that link doesnt work go to there site www.hotrodlane.cc

dont know if you can really use all of this but i figured it couldnt hurt. and you should figure out your vapor lock problem while your at it. have you had the tank out ? are the lines clear and can your tank vent to the atmosphere ? usually there is a vent line from your vapor seporator, i think it is the one that use to run to the charcoal canister.

an E2000 pump from your local parts store will work fine, have been running these electric pumps for years, only had to swap one out on the trail, I put it up on the frame, easy to get to, 30 min swap if needed, plenty of psi and lifetime warranty from the parts store, so I get a free one when the old ones craps out. I don't hear the noise personally over the mud tires and flapping soft top. In tank pumps are good for the points Jack mentioned but a PIA to change on the trail if needed.

hey Noah, who makes that pump ? i found that parts america sells two under that part number one by airtex ($167.00) and one by a company i have never heard of ($86.00) and they dont list any info on the pump, like pressure rating and hose fitting size. and they both have a one year warranty. and i see by your sig line you run a vortec motor, isnt that a TBI equiped motor ? he needed a high pressure pump around 45 psi to 60 psi for a MPFI set up. if this pump puts out enough pressure i would be interested. i bought a walbro GSL392 with install kit off ebay for $110.00 and free shipping.

they are just standard replacement parts from your local parts store, same s*** as calipers, rotors, etc.:

weird, I don't remember them being that expensive, thought I remember paying about $100 for them, ok, did another search on kragen.com, same pump here, for $86:

I get plenty of psi from this, the vortecs are a MPFI setup, multi port fuel injection, from what I remember I get around 45 psi at idle.....

so you used the $86.00 pump then ? s*** i could a maybe saved a couple bucks. and thanks i thought the vortec's were TBI i didnt relize they were MPFI. i will check the kragen site too, maybe they will have specs.

sorry if i hyjacked the thread but always interested in saving money.

OK checked kragen and they are part of parts america just like shucks and checker (crap)

While we find your parts, please enter your ZIP Code at PartsAmerica.com

Just bought the $86 pump for now, I can add the tank later if I need.

Noah, How much noise does the pump make? I have a soft top BFG Muds and a SM465 which is always whining away.

Thanks,
Kirk

IMO, it's not that bad at all, actually I ran the stock in tank pump from the suburban I got the engine from and it was as loud or louder, if you listen you can hear the in tank pumps on some chevy late model vehicles when they run, I can hear mine, but only with the engine off when it is priming.....
