Where can I buy a steering knuckle puller for 100?

Ok...looked and called all over trying to find the SST pictured here. I tried a Craftsman gear puller set to no avail. Anyone have a clue where I might find this SST?

I am in the middle of taking the entire front end apart. My current stop gap (hey thanks Rusty for the tool loan!) is trying to remove the knuckles to get the diff/cv axles out.

I think you can just go to any Kragens or PepBoys and get a "ball joint remover", the factory one has 2 limiting screws on the sides of the jaw itself to adjust the tension. It works really well, except for $150 price.

I can send you mine if you want. UPS will only take a day or so.

Oh yeah make sure the lower A-arm has something underneath it (like a seperate jackstand or a jack - of course after you have the other jackstand to support the truck) because once you undo the ball joint there is quite a bit of tension from the torsion bars - but you knew that already :grinpimp:

I just did my CV's right before Death Valley and it was fun :D Good thing I did it too because the passenger side CV was cracked and who knows it probably would have broken while I was gone. Also good thing Mudrak was kind enough to sell me some spares

That's what I've done for other vehicles, "free" to rent (you pay for the tool kit, then refunded upon return of tool kit).

Thanks Amando. I'll take a look at NAPA, Kragen again. I would like to purchase the tool to keep in the truck...but if I can't find one I'll take you up on your offer!

And yes I do have the lower A-arm supported...but thanks!

Hey Spresso, I would try NAPA auto parts or a REAL parts house for a some what quality tool. I think there's a auto/truck parts place out in Sparks that should have something. Look for K-D, OTC, or something that has some meat on it. I've seen those cheap "made in China" ones shatter under load.
AND WEAR SAFETY GLASSES!

OK...got the front axles disassembled and the front diff is dropped! The bottom knuckles were really frozen. After I got the puller bolt as tight as I dare get it...I wrapped on the cast knuckle portion with a BFH and it popped (tip #1).

I can't seem to figure out how to remove the ABS sensor or wire: Does one remove the whole assembly from the knuckle/axle bracket? Or just the wire?

Start on the rear diff removal later tonight (if I don't crash first  )

Yeah it is a 10mm bolt that you just undo and it will pull straight out.

Nice bottle jack underneath that a-arm:D

How come you took the whole 3rd member off? Just curious and just saw on your floor.

OK...removing the 10mm bolt that retains the bracket that holds the ABS sensor wire was simple enough. But the ABS sensor itself is stuck tightly to the steering knuckle. How much force should it take to push it through?

I am going to install (or shall I say HAVE installed :D) an ARB locker up front and also while they're in there I am converting to 4.88's. Plus new rotors, bearings, seals, cv axles...it's a big job I have been planning and purchasing parts for the past 9-months...sorta like having a kid I guess

So does that mean your going to spend 18 hours in labor?

Good luck Dan, save the old parts. I might need some of them....

That's good :bounce:

Probably a whole (can't wait for the pun gallery to respond to this one :bounce2: ) lot more labor hours before it's over and done with.

The CV AXLE (or boot?) was cracked?

OK...this is turning out to be a hijack of my own thread...but what the heck huh?!

Anyway...got the rear end disassembled tonight...the 3rd member is out! Off to River City Diffs on Friday :bounce:

This is the biggest pile of auto parts I have created in many years...hopefully it all goes back together with out extra parts left over :D

Yes both were cracked and damaged.

I'll try to post photos this week and start a new thread so I don't hijack this thread. :grinpimp:

Dan,

What did you end up using? SST? Or what?

I used a 2-leg gear puller from Sears. However it wasn't exactly ideal. What ever you use, after you get the threaded portion torqued down really well, hit this solidly with a BFH to knock the steering knuckle loose; someone else here gave me that tip and I believe you won't get the knuckle separated without a few solid whacks.

I later found these at ToolKing...they make 2 different sizes...I was always going to figure out which one would work for the 100 steering knuckles but never did...although it's still on my list of '100 do-dos" :D

FYI...I tried to find the OEM style SST but gave up after days of searching/calling...

spressomon,

did u have any pics how to installing rear locker with 4.88 and hose of the Compressor ?

Sorry for the delayed response...I was out cruiz'n ;) ...I used the OEM e-locker on the rear...
