Been looking for recommended zddp/zinc numbers for our flat tappet cam engines? I find stuff about high performance needs, but not the good old tractor motor (AKA 2FE). Any insight would be great. While looking, it seems that Rotella has low zddp numbers nowadays to, at least since '07 or thereabouts. Seems like using zddplus additive with good quality conventional is the ticket. Just cannot get a good PPM number.:bang:

Most will tell you that something within the 1400ppm to 1800ppm range for ZDDP is what the good ole 2F desires. However, that is hard to get without getting the expensive race oils or going to straight diesel oil. Do some research around on Bobistheoilguy.com and you will find what you are looking for, most here like Royal Purple, Rotella T5/T6, Delo 400LE, and now Castrol is making a 5W50 Syntec that is specifically formulated for these type engines (though at $9 a qt).

If nothing else you can just add some ZDDP additive to your oil and be good to go, but if you are really into it you could get yourself a kit from BlackStone Labs for Oil Analysis.

Once the last of my old stock CAT oil is gone, I'll use the equation 5 gallons run of the mill diesel oil + one bottle red line break in additive + happy engine.

So one bottle for two oil changes?

About that or one for three. It's been a while since posting / thinking about zddp numbers, cruiser doesn't see many miles currently, but last change was Rotella T6 plus a part bottle of the red line.

Just to clarify... 5 GALLONS, or 5 Quarts oil to one bottle redline (16 oz. presumed)??
Thanks,

1200-1400 ppm ZDDP

>1400ppm = increased wear.

What you don’t know about zinc can hurt you

This is the program I have been following... 2 oz. bottle ZDDPlus (branded) with the 5w-20 dino oil in winter, 15w-40 in summer.

The Castrol edge synthetic 5w-50 looks promising for a future consideration.

Back when I ran the numbers one bottle to a 5 gallon pail seemed right. I liked the red line because they tell you the ppm concentration in the bottle, so you can figure out what what ratio to use to bump your oil to the target ppm. So x parts of oil at say 1000ppm plus plus y parts of Red Line stuff at say 15 000ppm (pulling number out of my ass) gives a mix at 1400 ppm.
