Quinton and I were discussing this subject over many beers a few nights ago as he is struggling with finding a tow rig that fits his style (i'll let him say what his ideas were)

If I had some extra coin i'd be starting on this right now as my DD/tow rig

80's 3+3 GM crew cab body.
Custom interior
4x4
6bt cummins P pump
Every performance part Banks makes
NV5600
Dana 300 T-case
Dana 60 front
Dana 70 Rear dually
37" military tires to keep the RPM's and cost down.

what's yours?? Be realistic though unless you can afford a peterbuilt and or a custom freightliner and drive it, don't put it. In other words something that is you could actually do now or in a few years.

After listening to Quintons ideas I realized that many people will have completely different ideas than me and some will just like the already packaged ones from the factory.

Friend back home has one like the black F650..... fun to roll around glamis in

Mine would be a 70 series trayback.

How much can those tow???? Someone else was telling me that but I had a hard time seeing them tow a two car/ car hauler

Something like this... Just not as lifted

Although I was drawn to this non dually crew cab for some reason

We had a 1993 F350 Crew Cab longbed 4x4 with the 5 speed to haul our 3 tier Zodiac boat trailer and our Rigid Raiders. Poverty package and was a nice hauler.

Okay. Ive been meaning to ask...WTF is a poverty package?

Manual windows/door locks. Non sliding rear windows

on other vehicles would be no roof rack... etc....

My f250 is a poverty pac except for the cruise control.

I agree with Al on the late 80's GM body and Cummins / NV drivetrain, but I'd skip the 4wd and go for a 2wd, slammed stance. I want low to the ground for fuel efficiency ( lower coefficient of drag ) and I've got 4wd in my cruiser, no need for it in a tow rig. I'd also stick to 35" load range E tires.

This guy is doing it right:

For me its got to be 4wd because it would also be my camping rig. I've seen 2wd tow rigs get bogged down bad in the Parking lot of Rocky mt due to rain and mud. Back home a tow rig would have to be 4wd for the same reasons.... most of the time what you are towing (sand rail, quads, boats, jet skis, rock crawler) isn't going to be off loaded on paved roads.... a 2wd tow rig wouldn't make it 5 feet in pismo and glamis.

For NC most of the places I camp off the grid could also pose a problem for getting stuck.

If the rig is staying on paved road then the slammed tow rig makes sense.

I'd even do a 4wd stock height but it has to be 4wd for me.

Doesn't even have to be lifted to fit 37" military tires on it and at $59 a tire at some military surplus stores i'd save more money in tires than the fuel offset
