Hey Ya'll, just me again gettin opinions on tires from more expericenced MUD members then me, for my stock 97 80.
yokohama geolander mt?

I had a set on my Tacoma and it lasted me well over 40k miles. Very grippy against wet rocks and shed mud fairly well. Only thing I dislike was the price.

i found them for 224 a tire

I don't particularly care for directional tires. You really have to carry two spares if you get a bad puncture. Standard tire rotation doesn't work anymore either.

If I was buying mud tires, I'd go for the Goodyear MT/R or BFG MT's. Good off/on road manners, wear well and available in lots of sizes.

I had a set, they worked pretty good. Decent in the winter and decent off road, a little loud on the pavement. If I found a good price on them Id buy them again, but...

There is a lot of competition these days, and I would go for the best price on a near new set before I bought another set of new tires.

I've had a set of Geolander MT's on my 1997 w/ 4" lift for about 25k miles. The tires are excellent off road and offer a very soft compound which I like. They started off very quiet but have gotten progressively louder as I've put more miles on them. I'd recommend them and wouldn't hesitate to buy another set. The directional bit hasn't been a factor and I've put these tires through baja, death valley, snow, mud and sand. They've performed quite well in all respects. No flats to date (knock on wood). If I damaged a spare, I'd toss in on in a pinch and flip it around once I got back to civilization. Not a big deal to me at least.

I run Green Diamond Icelander M/Ts on my '94. They have basically the same tread pattern as the Geolander:

Although they have good off road manners, they have a quirk that I can only describe as this: They have too much traction for smooth performance on pavement. And this has been confirmed by other Geolander owners. For example, if you are on a paved road with ruts worn into the surface, the tires seem to have a mind of their own. Wandering and sudden lunges can happen. It can be unnerving if you're not expecting it, but tolerable for the off road performance. You need to keep your attention on your driving and they can add to fatigue on long trips. Don't know if its the square edges, the tread pattern or what, that causes this phenomenon, but I think you'd be wise to consider this before purchasing any tires, especially at that cost. My $.02
