I saw that one this morning. It looks like a sweet deal on a BJ42. However, I don't think the :princess: would be happy with it as her DD. This would be more her style (again just listed): 1992 Landcruiser. A little pricey for a 92 considering that a 94 can be had with lower kms for less than $6000 CAN in the US. I've finally figured out how to get better milaege with those fuel pigs - don't dive them. Putting them on propane would be interesting but with the fuel injection, it wouldn't be cheap.

Unless you guys are going to be doing a turbo diesel swap on a 1991-1992 FJ80, I don't know if I would recommend the 3FE considering if you buy a 1993+ you can get the 1FZ-FE with the possibility of lockers. My 2 cents...I drove my 3FE for a few months and it was very thirsty with no performance to justify it (sorry, Phil :)). The FZJ80 is a better deal...

No worries Stone, my choice out of the vehicles posted above would be the BJ42 with an extra 3B. Gobs of torque and great fuel economy.

I have been looking for an FZJ80. Timing is everything and right now there are not very many available in the US compared to Jan - Mar. For me the e-locker is not as big an issue as getting the 1FZ-FE. If the :princess: is driving it, it wouldn't see much e-locker use. I'd keep driving the Safari for work. It would be to expensive to run that fuel hungry beast with the kms I put on. It would also give me good reason to keep my eye out for a wrecked 81 or 61 for maybe a future diesel swap. :)

Interesting, I'm on the lookout for a clean 91 or 92 FJ80 for a TD swap (for my dad). I do agree there seem to be fewer on the market at the moment. Reason for a 91/92 is they don't have ABS, airbag, no need for the 1FZ and hopefully would be a more similar wiring harness to swap in the goodies from a 91 HDJ81. That red one was not quite in good enough shape underneath to be the 'right truck' so he didn't take it.

Prices on gasser 80s have found a hard bottom in the US now that the "cash for clunkers" law makes them worth $4k to the gov't. I think the days of $2500 80s are gone. Unfortunately, each of those 'clunkers' is melted down to become a H2.

Sad but true. Most of the cheap stock 80's were owned by people with no real ties or appreciation for cruisers. It's expensive to drive and maintain an 80 and that program may well be the out those people are looking for.

Martin, Tyee has an 81 listed "without the engine" for $5900: Detail Page. I am sure they would go lower. Not likely going to be a lot of demand from the usually buyers for an engineless vehicle. Of course, you really have no idea about the mechanical condition fo the rest of the running gear unless you can drive it and I have heard some stories about them from unhappy customers.

whats this cash for clunkers, you mean no cheap fj60 from the states either, is it just one vehicle, or if you had say 8 clunkers around could you take em to washington and get $32 000

I got a few clunkers will they take my sh*t

Tried to convince the old man he'd get use to a RHD, he doesn't want to give it a chance. He's been driving the bashed up 81 around his acreage though so he may warm up to the idea :meh:.

Jim the $4.5k is towards new car trade in I think. They collect them up and crush them so they won't even be at parts wreckers. A big 3 subsidy.

Yeah, I think the requirement is that you buy something new that gets at least 3MPG better than your 'clunker'. Right now somebody out there is saving the world by trading their classic Mustang for a Focus.

What, he's already got a bashed up 81! This should be a no brainer. But my wife won't even consider a RHD either.

That $4.5 is really putting a dent in the market for me. I am sure their are also more than a few 80s with lockers going to the crusher because the owners don't have a clue what they have. :bang: Got to love free enterprise in the land of the free.

I thought there was a catch, sucks their crushing everythng so no one can get parts, trying to push everyone out of the better older stuff into these disposable crap cars.

Speaking of disposable, Tata (made in India) just released their new car to the public, which sells for $2200. Apparently it surprised everyone when it passed the European crash tests.

Further, I believe you have had to own the vehicle for a year, I think insured, and be able to drive it to the crusher. Like Martin stated, they don't/can't part them out... really sucks!

And here we always seem to under estimate the quality of child labour.
