I have no clue what this is, but it is growing out of a rust spot on the right front fender. Take a look...

Does anyone have any clue what this is, it kind of looks like a sponge.

fawkin PO's! its the foam in a can you use to insulate your house(or the holes in the studs where the wires goe thru) it sucks up water big time. Seems the PO your 60 had the same brilant idea as the PO of my fj55......the rockers were full of that s*** as well as the fenders!

I think thats the only place where it is. But I will have to check. Is it something that will damage my car?

The foam will not damage it, but the water that the foam absorbs might.

I was scared when I clicked on this thread that another alien-being-wart-tentical thingy had made the transition from dogs'ears to Cruisers...

I use that s*** to keep tons of water out of the back as my panels are rusted back several inches I could care less if it causes more rust and it does a great job of keeping things dry back there. Once it hardens I shape it, then I spray that underbody rubber stuff over it to make it less conspicuous and to repel water. seems to work pretty good.

Man, I feel sorry for you rust belt guys...

And you should feel sorry for us!

Is there anything that can be done to keep rust free trucks rust free int he so called rust belt? I am surprised that the chemistry community has not come up with some way to neutralize the oxidation reaction that causes rust when steel meets salt. Seems like it should be simple, but what do I know.

the Aussies sell an electrical product that supposedly negates rust. runs off of the vehicle's electrical system and IIRC, the charge it creates prevents the oxidation from taking place. hmmmm......

check it out: http://motorcare.com.au/erps.htm

seems like a ringer for the rust belt states

I think I remember the US gov't restricting these devices, or perhaps the advertising of these advices do to the manufacturer's making unrealistic claims about their effectiveness.

The Aussie magazines are full of these units and they all claim to stop rust in your entire neighborhood.

I'd like to see some real world documentation in, say the great lakes region of NA using a Land Cruiser over a five year period.

All that being said Greg Bowie has been studying rust proofing coatings and has talked about it in the international Cruiser section recently.

Keeping things clean

Those things look sweet. I would love to hear any testimonials from anyone who uses them. I would like to buy a rust free cruiser and drive it in wisconsin all year, might be just the ticket up here.

My car used to have no rust when we first got it. But about 5 years ago my dad got a promotion and was able to park in a heated garage at work. During the winter when they would put salt down it would get into the metal and activate inside the heated garage. But now the city I live in uses this blue liquid instead of salt and sand, that is what that white stuff is.

I have not seen those particular devices in the link so I am no judge of their effect.

But the electrostatic thingies I saw growing up in Cleveland Ohio (rust belt central?) could NEVER keep up with the rust. Funniest thing I saw was a '78 Bronco with one of these devices surrounded with rust bubbles. I think moisture must have gotten beneath the attachment.

A good idea, but I wouldn't expect even the best system to do more than slow the process a little. It won't prevent rust.
