Howdy Delancy,

If you don't mind me asking, if you can't locate a 55 PS box, what's your next plan to swap over to power steering??
60-toy mini??

Or are you staying fast on a '78-'79 box??

Thanks!

Peter

Pm me your number and let's talk. I've been wanting to do a 60
Ps conversion from my stock 55 ps and you just might motivate me

Ps '69 fj55

I noticed you said "holding fast" Hope this is of interest to you or someone.
When I thought of this I had a bad shoulder and wanted to drive my pig). I got tired of waiting so...

I have a '69 FJ 55, and about 7 years ago I decided to do it myself.
It was really not that bad. Took some time to get the parts together, and get the welding done but here is what I did and I have had no problems:

I found an '84 Toyota pick up in the bone yard, got the PS gear box, then
I noticed a '77 Chevy Monte Carlo with a straight 6 like the Pig (any older GM straight 6 would do), and I snagged the PS pump and mounting bracket. (I noticed later this bracket was readily available at CCOT) a bit more pricey, but ready to go.

I called Lance at Iron Pig (He has a post on the tech page of this forum) , and they had a custom mounting bracket for the gear box which included an integrated shock mount.

I bolted this all on, and made up a hose from a new '84 Toyota Camry (I believe) It had two correct ends already installed.

Also had to do some bracket modifications (grinding & spacing) for the PS pump (Saginaw), I figured out what I needed and had a friend do the welding), it isn't real pretty, but works great!

This is the best mod I ever put on my pig!:steer:
Still Works Great!, I can eat a sandwich and park the truck at the same time!:

This got me thinking about other stuff and next I added power disc brakes front and back. WOW! My daughter got mad at me about this one, she said she misses the PumP PumP before stopping every time.;)

I still want to put on an All Pro disc parking brake kit.

Any time spent behind the wheel of my cruiser, is time well spent!
I have some more pix, if you need them, PM me and I can send direct, I'm new at uploading, it only let me post 5 pix.

If this explains the depths of my resolve....

I bought a brand new 40 power steering gearbox casting and have sold, in favor of the OE 55 power steering system, after sourcing the components to complete the 40 box.

They ARE different and desire a "bolt-on, bolt off" [in Pat Morita voice] operation for both the 76 and 72, the latter more critical to the overall resto goal.

While I may not use the OE pump on the 76, the gearbox and corresponding shaft are the more elegant solution, in my twisted, weird, borderline manic way of thinking, and an obsessive/compulsive nature sees no other option.

They're rare, I have a few proposals on the table, but still actively seeking as I'll take all presented.

I do have one resource that's a phone call away, that can satisfy this aspect....at a cost greater than the purchase price of either Pig and not even for the entire system, but would like to utilize the capital on other aspects of the build.

So, still actively hunting.

Delancy,
I just remembered. The '79 factory setup requires a different steering shaft, as well. THAT's going to be hard to find.

If it boils down to it, I can modify the OE shaft to fit, since it's a shortening, not lengthening process.

Can refab the shaft....can't refab the gearbox. Haha.

I believe it was on PBB, but cruiserbrett depicted the process, and it wasn't extreme, if memory serves.

If things work the way I hope, you'll get mine with the set-up

Always of interest.

I believe the OE Pig power steering utilizes the block mounted bracket.....which I don't have provisions for....yet.

Yes, I am dumb enough to tap the block to prep for, one I can confirm the OE pumps fitment.

Very interesting as CCOT doesn't offer the "kit" any longer, that I can see.

Is there a licensing agreement on this bracket?

Why do JT and MAF seem to be the only resources for?

Out of curiosity.
